Pablo Larrazábal will take a three-shot lead into the weekend at the Volvo China Open after an excellent 66 on day two at Topwin Golf and Country Club.

The Spaniard has been in a rich vein of form this season, with four top-20 finishes this year, including a tie for 11th at last week’s Shenzhen International. A bogey-free weekend helped him to that position at Genzon Golf Club and he extended his flawless run to 81 holes before dropping a shot on the 17th as he got to 14 under.

South African Dylan Frittelli earlier fired a course-record equalling 63 to get to 11 under and was joined by overnight leader Alexander Levy – who had set the record on Thursday and followed up with a 70.

South Korea’s Soomin Lee was a further shot back after a blemish-free 65, with Belgian Thomas Detry and South African George Coetzee at eight under.

Pablo Larrazábal

“I played probably tee to green the best golf of my career over the weekend, and believe it or not I didn’t hole any putts, I shot 11 under par over the last weekend but I didn’t hole as many putts as I wanted to but it looks like these past two days have been the other way around.

“It looks like my putting has been working very good. I am hitting it solid but last weekend I hit the ball very good. Today in the news in Spain they were saying I was 65 holes without a bogey and I went 16 today without a bogey, I had it all day in my mind – don’t make bogey – you know put the ball in position and at the beginning was hard. I felt like at 17 and 18 I left a couple out there but I am very happy with the way it went.

“I really pushed that one at 11 – I was aiming to the bunker and I pushed it five metres and holed the putt – but it’s going all my way the last two days but a lot of golf to be played and a lot of things to do until the first tee tomorrow. It’s been a great two days of work, I have been playing good and putting awesome so I am looking forward to the weekend.

“It’s been a long time since I have been leading a golf tournament and I love it, so hopefully another good 36 holes and we will see what happens.

Dylan Frittelli

“I played quite nicely today – apparently it was pretty easy! I made a bunch of birdies and a nice eagle on eleven but it’s not as easy as it looks, I really had a great round today.

“I’ve been playing great for a few weeks now so whenever I make a bogey I’m really disappointed, so to get a clean card today – I haven’t done that in a while, so I’m really happy about that.

“Conditions were easier today, yesterday we had about a two club win throughout the whole round so it was difficult. I shot two under and felt like I maybe left two shots out there but still was happy with the first round, and today was just pristine conditions, a light wind and cool temperatures and able to fly at a few flags there and managed to execute really well

“I don’t know if I’m going to be leading by the end of the day but I’m sure the guys will take it low. Maybe two or three shots back going into the weekend, but somewhere in contention on the weekend is where I like to be.

Alex Levy

“It was a slow start today. All day I want to say because I finished with two birdies to shoot 70. From the seventh I started to play good but I didn’t hole a lot of putts today but I finished nicely.

“Yesterday was a fantastic day for me, I know today was different and the condition was a little bit tougher and windy, but I think I play good and it’s nice to be in this position for the weekend.

“You can control what you do but you can’t control the other players, but I feel great, I feel happy to be in the position last week and this position this week, so I just want to have fun on the golf course.
