Inicio If I was McIlroy…

If I was McIlroy…

In the third round at the US Open, Rory McIlroy went out to conquer the world, but he ended up shooting 40 on the front nine at Pinehurst. On the 5th hole, par 5 downwind, he hit a great drive, leaving himself just a 7-iron into the green. It was clear. Now or never. An eagle to kick-start his round. But he showed he was anxious and ended up bogeying the hole.

Nobody dares to write off McIlroy, but the fact of the matter is that today he is eleven shots off the lead. I am convinced that his US Open ended right there on the 5th hole.

His 7-iron approach went into the bunker on the left, a situation that didn´t seem too difficult. From the bunker, he tried to give himself the option for birdie, he made good contact on his third shot but the ball stopped short and then started to roll backwards and into the same bunker. His fourth shot landed in the same place but this time it didn´t roll back into the bunker. He marked it quickly before it could move. From what should have been a simple up and down for birdie, Mcllroy managed to make bogey.

After the round, he maturely said, “sometimes I need to control my enthusiasm”.

Conclusion, if I had the game of McIlroy in my head and in my hands (not his bank account, you see, I don´t ask for much), I´m sure I would have done the same as him at the 5th hole. Damn!!
