Knock, Knock, Knocking on…

Imagine the scene. A conversation with Rafael Cabrera Bello just after he signed his card after the fourth round at Wentworth.

Let´s be more precise. We didn´t speak straight after, it was a few minutes later, and he had time to change his shoes and digest the tournament.

The Canarian was calculating his position and had estimated 15th place. Which is not bad for a tournament such as the BMW – which attracts some of the world´s top players. But he wasn´t satisfied. Without wanting to dramatise or exaggerate, he made a face and started murmuring ¨Enough of this knocking on the door¨.

Of course he has his reasons, in 2014 there have been many weekends where he has been looking up. For example, a week later he was in a similar situation in Sweden.

This year he has only missed one cut and in nearly half of his appearances he has finished in the top 10 or close to (Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Morocco, China, Wentworth, Malmoe…).

Interesting reading runs in the background, in my opinion. And fortunately Rafa is one that always finds time to stop and analyze it.

Let´s look at the facts: he began the year 140th in the world rankings and after five months was ranked 89th. Also in 2014 he has had the same number of top 10 finishes than in any of the previous years since becoming professional (and the season is only at the half-way stage).

Cabrera Bello continues to knock on the door, it’s true. Whether you win or not you have to keep knocking, and not only once… He is thumping regularly for his third win on the European Tour, and if he continues to do so he will soon become part of the world´s top 50.
