The future of golf…

The topic of today is data. Interesting, indeed. A review of the top-100 male and female amateurs in the world. With all the usual precautions and reservations made when speaking of youngsters, let’s say the future looks great.

1. The first conclusion is clear. The strength of the US. For the men, 44 of the top-100 players are American, including the top-3, and a total of six representatives in the top-10, and 18 in the top-50. For the women, it’s more or less the same: 37 amateurs in the top-100, four in the top-10 and 18 in the top-50.

2. Let’s take a look at Spain. The future looks good. In the men’s ranking there are four Spaniards in the top-100: Mario Galiano (13º), Jon Rahm (35º), Emilio Cuartero (50º) and Pep Angles (79 °). Plus, Scott Fernandez who is 109th.

Only the United States (44) England (9) and Australia (8) have more players in the top-100.

In the women’s ranking the stats are even better. Six Spanish in the top-100: Naomi Jimenez (11th), Celia Barquín (30th), Moon Sobrón (40th), Marta Sanz (60th), Natalia Escuriola (63rd) and Nuria Iturrios (78th). Plus Maria Palacios who is 102nd.

Looking carefully, only the US with 37, have more players in the top-100. Spain, with its six representatives are joint second with England and Canada.

3. And speaking of Canada. They are also doing very well. In addition to the six players in the top-100 (one of them is number 3 Mackenzie Brooke Henderson). In the men´s, there are four Canadians, as many as Spain and Ireland.

4. Sweden on the other hand draws attention. Only today do they have a player in the men´s top-100 and two players in the women´s top-100. Little reward for a country that is working so hard to develop youth golf and for a nation that aspires to be a world power in golf.

5. Neither does it seem normal to have only two Korean players in the women´s top-100. Has this well-oiled machine suddenly gone rusty? Not really, more likely they are playing on the professional tour.
