I tell you my thing with the drive…

How wonderful and how damn this blessed sport of ours, golf, can be. If on Thursday they put a paper on the table saying that I am going to finish fifth in the Jonsson Workwear Open, I would have signed it with my eyes closed. However, on Sunday, after having that three-meter putt on the 18th to finish second, the feeling is of anger. It just doesn’t give us a break. Always hammering the head.

By the way, a note about that birdie putt on the 18th, after returning from the storm suspension. Television deceives, but I assure you that you couldn’t see anything. I threw it in the dark. I think it was a mockery of karma. Although in Kenya and the first one in South Africa I had already putted better than weeks before, I did not feel comfortable on the greens. For this reason, last week I decided to work on the putting green with my eyes closed, to feel the rhythm even better. Well, on Sunday I had the same feeling, of putting almost with my eyes closed… I was very angry because they had seen it well (with Gonzalo Vicente, my caddie), but I hit it a little with the tip of the club and it left. You leave with a feeling of sadness, but with the satisfaction of having played golf very well.

In any case, it has been a great week, very positive, with many Race to Dubai points that were already needed. The tournament slipped away from me between holes 11 and 14 on Sunday. They were four consecutive putts between three and five meters that did not enter. I missed them throwing them very well. Afterwards, it is true that the reaction was very good. On the 15th I hit the best shot of the day. I don’t think anyone left it closer. Later it was the eagle on the 17th. Positive week that we needed. In Kenya I played very well and missed the cut, last week, also and I was 30th… It was a matter of everything fitting. I have worked well in the preseason and things are coming out, but we must continue.

I tell you a curiosity from Sunday. In the morning, at home, before going out to play, I put in the notes of the mobile the result that I had to make to win. If I had done it, I would have won. But hey, I insist, very positive week. I hit it very well. The weekend was not so solid, but quite good and the putt has started to work again. I have regained a good touch.

Finally, many of you comment on my driver after seeing me on television. It’s exactly what you’re seeing. I don’t leave anything in each drive. I go with everything. To the limit. I tell you where it comes from…

It’s something we started working on before the end of last season. We had to get something more out of the drive. I started doing it with Jordi García del Moral on the practice field and it worked. I tried it for the first time in competition in Sotogrande, on a wider street, and it went well. Since then, I hit all the drives full. I have never been a great driver hitter so I lost many meters compared to the rest. So, going with everything, I hit a lot more, I am able to put the club further from the body, with some overswing and I generate more club speed. I’m driving better, I hit more, I make more meters and I get more performance. There’s not much more to talk about.
