Great comeback from Cata to hold up the banner of the Armada

It was not a dream start for the Armada at the start of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. The delay in the start of the final round due to bad weather was a kind of bad omen for ours. As if they too were late for the exam. Of the seven who are playing, an unprecedented record that we will see if it is ever repeated, only three are currently within the cut and only Cata Fernández (-2) has some cushion thinking about tomorrow.

In fact, the Madrid woman from Texas A&M holds the banner of Spanish women’s golf with a round of 70 strokes on the Champions Retreat course. It was a round of less to more. Cata started at 10 with a stuck golf, signing two bogeys in the two par 5s of this stretch, leaving a lot of ground. However, far from losing patience and nerves, her reaction was fabulous. She opened the can of birdies at hole 1, sending the message that what had happened before was already forgotten.

From there, she signed three more birdies and managed to get into the eleventh place, on the edge of the top 10 and looking at the top of the leaderboard. She is four strokes from the first leader, the Scottish Hannah Darling (-6). In addition, Ingrid Lindblad (-4), World Number One who is always a good reference in a classification, is in second place. Then what has to happen will happen, but a priori the Swede is, without a doubt, the best wheel to follow this week.

The stellar moment of Cata’s round has come in the final part, specifically at hole 8, par 3. The Madrid woman has been about to make a hole in one. Her shot has been impressive. “The birdie of the hole in one has been key. From there everything has been easy. It’s a pity that the hole in one 1 in the 8 didn’t come out, but I’m left with the fact that it was a great shot,” she explained at the end of her round.

The staging of Andrea Revuelta (PAR) and Paula Martín (PAR) has not been bad at all. It should be taken into account that they are making their debut in this tournament, however they have shown not to be impressed by the scenario. The golf of the two is a sure value and they have shown it again at the start of one of the amateur Majors of the year. Both have demonstrated birdie capacity. Paula has made three, for another three bogeys, and Andrea has signed four, against a double bogey and two boegys. The double bogey came at hole 8, painful because it was at the end of her round with a partial of one under par, but she finished with birdie at 9, showing once again that ease she has to turn the page.

The rest of the Spaniards are between the sword and the wall, with the need to sign a great round this Thursday to pass the cut (thirty best and tied) and thus play the definitive round on Saturday at Augusta National. Carolina López Chacarra, in her first official round after a long time due to a rib injury, has made +2, Julia López has started with +4, finishing with a bogey and double bogey in the last three holes, Rocío Tejedo has made +5 and Carla Bernat has signed +6. There is still room to get into the cut tomorrow, but they are obliged to a great performance.
