Julia López makes the leap and turns professional. One of the great projects of Spanish golf has decided to end her university stage and now take the leap she so desires.
The 21-year-old from Málaga found herself at a crossroads that she had to resolve before 15 November. After passing the second stage of the LPGA School, she had to decide whether to take the step since the final stage can only be played by professionals, or finish her last year at Mississippi State.
“The decision is made. I’m going to turn professional,” Julia confirmed exclusively to TenGolf. After much thought and consideration, Julia is clear that it is the right time and she wants to play that final stage of the School. The decision is made.
With this step, the Spaniard ends a stage that has been spectacular in many ways. Julia’s records as an amateur are impressive. At 21, she has been World Number One, a milestone in the history of Spanish golf. She has also won the European Championship at both individual and team levels, and has debuted in Majors by playing two British Opens where she made the cut on both occasions.
She bids farewell to the American collegiate league with seven victories, the absolute record of Mississippi State University, where she holds numerous spectacular records. She leaves amateurism, by the way, on the podium of the world ranking as she is currently third.
Julia’s ceiling is unknown, but she aims high. The Benahavis native already has secured rights for the Epson Tour in 2025, but she logically arrives at the final stage of the LPGA School with the firm intention of fighting for one of the 25 cards that grant access to the top American division.
The Final of the LPGA Tour School will take place from 5 to 9 December at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail complex in Alabama, on the Falls and Crossings courses. All players will play two rounds on each of these courses, and after the fourth day, a first cut will be made. The fifth and final round will be played on the Crossings course, and the top 25 and ties will earn the LPGA Tour card, category 14.
And, of course, Julia will be there debuting as a professional.
