Spanish golf will once again be generously represented at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, one of the most important events on the women’s golfing calendar. It takes place the week before the Masters and serves as an extraordinary appetizer to the first men’s Major of the year. The first edition took place in 2019 and next year will be the sixth, with the exception of 2020, which was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Spain will contribute no less than six golfers, an extraordinary figure considering the tournament is limited to 72 players. Barring injury between now and April, we will have Andrea Revuelta, Paula Martín, Cata Fernández, Carla Bernat, Rocío Tejedo, and Carolina López Chacarra at the ANWA. All of them are qualified by world ranking, reserved for the top 30 non-American players in the world, a very exclusive club.
There are six Spaniards and it really should be seven, the same as last year, same number and same names, but Julia López, who would have been in Augusta for sure, decided to turn professional at the beginning of December to compete in the LPGA Tour Q-School Final. Let’s also remember that the move paid off, as she secured her card for the American circuit for next year.
Thus, in 2025, barring a last-minute surprise in the form of an invitation, we will not have any Spanish rookies in the tournament. They all already have the experience of previous years. The Castellón native Carla Bernat, the best Spaniard this year (17th position), will play it for the third time; the Madrid native Andrea Revuelta (20th in 2024) will participate for the second time; it will be the third for fellow Madrid native Cata Fernández (also 20th in 2024); Paula Martín, also from Madrid, will be present for the second time (24th in 2024); the veteran is Carol López Chacarra, also from Madrid, who will compete in the tournament for the fifth time, while Rocío Tejedo, from Castellón like Carla, will play it for the second time. Both Rocío and Carolina missed the cut this year.
So far, the best result for Spanish golf in the ANWA is the sensational fourth place achieved by Cata Fernández in her debut in 2023. That is the target to beat.
Let’s remember the tournament format: it is played over three days, 54 holes. The first 36 are contested at the Champions Retreat course, very close to Augusta National and always in exceptional conditions. This will happen on Wednesday and Thursday. After the second round, a cut will be made with the top 30 and ties. Friday is the practice day at Augusta National. All players, both those who have made the cut and those who have not, play at the Georgia coliseum. Finally, on Saturday, the third and final round is held at Augusta National. The name of the champion will be decided there. So far, the winners are Jennifer Kupcho, Tsubasa Kajitani, Anna Davis, Rose Zhang, and Lottie Woad, the current World Number One amateur.
