In early August of last year, Ángel Cabrera was released from prison after serving two and a half years for being found guilty of two episodes of domestic violence. Since then, the Argentine golfer has made a significant effort to reintegrate both into society and into the sport in which he was once a star. A quiet work that this past weekend had its reward with his first victory in this new stage.

At the Paul Lawrie Match Play, a tournament of the Legends Tour of the European circuit played in match play format at the Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club in Hertfordshire, in the United Kingdom. Cabrera managed to win 3&1 against James Kingston in the grand final after overcoming the group stage and winning in the following knockout rounds against Michael Long (quarterfinals) and Bradley Dredge (semifinals). A success that he celebrated by speaking in English to the media, something he did not usually do years ago on the PGA Tour.

“I am very happy and very excited. I worked very hard in the last two months for this moment and I am enjoying it. I had to keep my focus, playing hole by hole, and that was it. Did winning those two majors help me to define in those final holes? Of course, it gave me the necessary experience,” said the golfer from Villa Allende, 54 years old, who is facing a new stage in his life after his time in prison.

“I like to participate in match play tournaments. I don’t usually play in this format, but I like it. I will play next week in Ireland and I have to keep working, because this sport is very difficult,” he insisted.

Cabrera had also received good news on the administrative front because the United States embassy has granted him a visa for 10 years. The process had been delayed and is the reason why he could not play the Masters of Augusta last April (he can always play it as a former champion of the tournament). But now the doors are wide open for him to play the Champions Tour, the senior American circuit, where his friend Ricardo González achieved membership. It’s his next challenge.

“My challenge is to succeed in the Champions Tour and obviously win majors on the tour”, recently acknowledged the Pato. Another notable aspect for the Argentine is that he has not felt any discomfort in the wrist that had to be operated on in 2020: “The truth is that until then I was playing with one hand,” he admitted. The next stop of the Legends Tour will be the Irish Legends, at Seapoint Golf Links in Louth county, where Cabrera will be back in the field.
