Alejandro Cañizares (-1) and Pep Anglés (PAR) have left the door open to victory at the Lexus Challenge, a tournament on the Asian Development Tour being played at The Bluffs Grand Ho Tram course in Vietnam. It is the second division of the Asian Tour, a circuit for which they secured a category through the School, although Cañi is playing with an invitation.
It is a three-round tournament, and the first two rounds were played on Wednesday and Thursday. The playing conditions on the first day were extreme due to wind, while today the situation has calmed down significantly, resulting in better scores. The leaders are Englishman Sam Broadhurst and Swede Filip Lundell, both with a score of -7. Therefore, the lead is six and seven shots away from the Spaniards, respectively.
It is not an easy task by any means, but at least there is an opportunity. After all, fifth place is at -3. A very good round from Cañizares or Anglés and a slip from the two leaders could unleash the perfect storm. That is what they will be aiming for this Friday in the third and final round.
Cañizares started with a great round of 69 strokes, two under par, on the first day. The Andalusian placed himself in second place, just one shot behind the leader. He made three birdies, an eagle, and three bogeys in a survival round. His game was on point. Today, the round was much less eventful. Without playing poorly, but with a somewhat cold putter. He made two bogeys and a solitary birdie for a score of 72 strokes.
Meanwhile, Anglés started yesterday in a somewhat abrupt manner. He made a double bogey on his first hole of the tournament and repeated the result on the third. Or in other words, on holes 10 and 12. From there, he had to fight back, and he certainly did. His partial score is four under in 33 holes. If anything has been proven lately, the Catalan golfer has the game to go very low, so he is not ruling anything out for tomorrow. Not long ago at Infinitum, he already signed one of those stellar rounds to fight for victory.
The tournament is part of the second division of the Asian Tour, but the course is in perfect condition. It has already hosted first division tournaments and is excellently maintained. Its main defence is the wind. It is located within a very powerful holiday resort in Vietnam. However, neither Cañi nor Anglés are on holiday, and tomorrow they will come out with determination, ready for battle.
