Sergio García (-5) has started off on the right foot in the International Series in Macau, the fourth event of the Asian Tour season. The golfer from Borriol, with a great round of 65 strokes, is among the top five on the leaderboard, one stroke behind Miguel Tabuena (-6), Peter Uihlein (-6), and Kalle Samooja (-6), who share second place, and two behind the leader, American Patrick Reed (-7).
The Spanish golfer, like the other 149 players participating in this event, is seeking one of the three spots for the Open Championship at Royal Portrush that will be awarded to the top three finishers this week. A real jackpot for a player like Sergio, who always looks ambitiously at the Majors and the Ryder, also aware that as a LIV player, except for the Masters, for which he is qualified for life, the opportunities to play them are not many.
The golfer from Castellón, who recently won in Hong Kong and suffered in Singapore due to an illness that left him weakened, has managed to fully recover to show once again this Thursday that he is in a sweet spot in his game. He didn’t mind starting the day with a bogey on the par four of his second hole. His reaction was immediate, with birdies on the 3rd, 4th, and 6th, and in the second half of the Macau Golf & Country Club, a beautiful course between the mountains and the sea of southern China, he confirmed his remarkable start to the tournament.
He took advantage of the par five on the 12th with his fourth birdie of the day; and on the par four of the 15th, he scored again, moving closer to the top positions. On the 16th, he perhaps made his only major mistake of the round, a poor approach from the fairway that went long of the green, forcing him to recover from a tricky area of tall grass. But he bounced back from the bogey with a great shot from the tee on the 17th, leaving himself a one-and-a-half-meter birdie putt that he didn’t miss, and securing his seventh birdie of the day on the ‘easy’ 18th, a very accessible par five.
Peter Uihlein was THIS close to an albatross 🤯@intseriesgolf @PeterUihlein @RangeGoatsGC @livgolf_league#InternationalSeries #ThisISEverything #TimeToRise pic.twitter.com/1hzTteQwFP

This last hole of the course was precisely what allowed Peter Uihlein to make a big leap in the standings. He almost made an albatross from the fairway and left the eagle within reach. As he has been showing in recent weeks in LIV, the American is capable of combining impossible shots with unforgivable mistakes. A dangerous rival, in any case, in search of one of those three spots for the Open, just like Reed, Sebastián Muñoz (-5), or Lucas Herbert (-5).
UNREAL 😍

The rest of the Spanish players present at this Asian event will have to push from tomorrow if they want to reach the weekend with chances. Davig Puig (-1) is tied for 53rd after signing a card of 69 strokes, with a tremendous eagle holing out from off the green, three birdies, and four bogeys; Luis Masaveu (+1) is tied for 90th after a round of 71 strokes with two birdies and three bogeys; while Eduard Rousaud (+3) has it tough after his 73 today, with three birdies, four bogeys, and a double bogey.
