The wind, which had already blown yesterday, has made its presence felt again this Friday at the Doha Golf Club with gusts between 20 and 25 kilometres per hour, complicating life for the 75 players who made the cut in the International Series Qatar, the penultimate tournament of the season on the Asian Tour. Uncomfortable playing conditions have slowed down the Spaniards in their attempt to position themselves to fight for victory tomorrow.
David Puig (-7), who started the day four shots behind the leader, had to battle to scrape a round of 73, but has fallen six behind Peter Uihlein (-13), so he will need a great comeback this Saturday… and for all the players ahead of him to falter, after dropping to a tie for seventh place. And Luis Masaveu (-4), who also started four off the lead, struggled today with a 76 that takes him out of the equation.

Eugenio López-Chacarra (-7) also couldn’t capitalise on the momentum of starting his round with a tremendous eagle on his first hole. He had to settle for just one more birdie and two bogeys to hand in a card of 71, his third consecutive round under par, which, like Puig, leaves him six shots behind the South African leading the standings, with slim chances of seeking victory.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (+5), after making the cut with his daughter Lola carrying his bag, succumbed today in the gale at the Doha Golf Club with a 79 that places him second to last among those who made it through Friday’s cut. Ahead, 18 more holes to try until the end in a tournament where Zach Bauchou (-12), Gaganjeet Bhullar (-9) and Stefano Mazzoli (-9), who shone with a hole-in-one, present themselves as the main alternatives to Uihlein… without ruling out Louis Oosthuizen (-8) yet.

Patrick Reed (-6), last Sunday’s winner, also appears close to the top 10. Meanwhile, Ben Campbell (-5) is currently getting the better of John Catlin (-3) in the battle for the top spot in the International Series rankings and to earn a place in the LIV Golf League in 2025, although we’ll have to wait until tomorrow, calculator in hand, to see if his lead in the table is enough to make a comeback.
