Spanish hat-trick at the Regionals. Carla Bernat (-12) was crowned champion of the Lexington Regional this Wednesday. With her victory, she joins the wins achieved on Tuesday by Carol Chacarra and Andrea Revuelta in their respective Regionals. It is a historic milestone in national amateur golf that three Spanish women have won so many American university Regionals in the same year. Incredible.
The golfer from Castellón continues her winning streak, celebrating another title after the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She is undoubtedly one of the most in-form amateur golfers at the moment. Adding to her victory at Mountain College in early March, she claims her third win in Lexington in just two months.
The Spanish player entered the decisive round in third position, two strokes off the lead. Well, Carla matched the best scorecard of the week to finish winning by two strokes. A round of 66 strokes and victory in the bag, but the way she did it was even more impressive. On the fifth hole, she holed an incredible albatross. On the first par five at Keene Trace Golf Club, she holed her second shot from a distance. She gained three strokes on the field in one fell swoop to climb to the top of the leaderboard. She would not relinquish the top spot.
Thanks to the Spanish player’s performance, Kansas State University finished in third position in the team standings and also qualified for next week’s final event at the Nationals.
Carla is sticking to -12. She won this week at twelve under par, the same score with which she won the ANWA and the same with which she claimed the Absolute Spanish Championship at Escorpión five years ago. It’s something to think about, an impressive coincidence.
It was almost four national victories. Paula Francisco, who had finished the first two rounds at the top of the Charlottesville Regional, couldn’t maintain the pace and missed out on the win by just one stroke. A second place of great merit for the Spanish player who studies at the University of Florida and who will also be at the decisive Nationals event starting on 15 May.
