Alejandro Cañizares started the year 2025 without any category to play on the DP World Tour or the HotelPlanner Tour. It was a very complicated situation. NCAA champion, two victories on the European Tour, and 18 seasons at the highest level, and suddenly, he found himself not knowing exactly what he could play or not. He moved heaven and earth, called every number in his contacts, asked here, there, and everywhere, and finally started playing wherever he could.
He was seen in some tournaments of the Andalusian Professional Circuit, the Winter Tour, the Spanish PGA Doubles, the Nordic League, and even a couple of appearances on the Asian Development Tour, the second division of the Asian Tour. He went to Vietnam and Pakistan because it was the only thing he could play. In short, his intention was to show that he was willing to play wherever necessary because he is convinced that he still has a lot of golf to show at 42 years old.
Among the calls he made was the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. Cañi asked for some invitations to the HotelPlanner Tour. It is not an easy situation for the Spanish Federation. There are many Spanish golfers in a similar situation to Cañi, veterans who have had doors closed in recent years due to poor results and young players who have not yet been able to open them after a more than promising amateur career. Normally, the Federation focuses more on helping those who are starting, as is logical, but it also has gestures for those players who have given so much glory to our sport. In any case, there are not enough invitations for everyone, and the balance in these decisions is not easy.
Finally, a few weeks ago, the Spanish Federation confirmed to Cañizares that they had secured five invitations for him this season. A bonus for the golfer residing in Estepona. Specifically, he will play the Challenge de España, the Danish Golf Challenge, the Challenge de Cádiz, the Kaskada Golf Challenge, and the D+D Real Czech Challenge. The first three are consecutive, and the other two are played in June and July.
It is a bonus because he started the season without a place, but at the same time, it is pressure. Now the ball is in his court. He has these five opportunities to play well, get results, and earn a place on his own merits for next year. It is a race against time. Of course, the first objective is to accumulate enough points to obtain the Challenge category for next year. After that, it’s all about playing well and dreaming. Any top 10 in these five tournaments could allow him to play some more weeks apart from the five guaranteed. Of course, a victory would change everything. It would immediately give him the HotelPlanner Tour card and could even put him in the fight to ascend to the DP World Tour through the Road to Mallorca. It wouldn’t be the first case.
For all these reasons, the event at the Fontanals Golf Club starting this Thursday is not just another week for Alejandro Cañizares. It is the point where an opportunity begins that he did not count on just four months ago.
