The tournament arrives at Isla Canela Links at a key moment in the calendar, with the battle for promotion to the DP World Tour completely open and several of the circuit’s most in-form players ready to deliver a week of maximum demand

With the fight for the DP World Tour promotion places tighter than ever, every shot carries huge weight: the top 15 in the rankings will secure DP World Tour cards at the end of the year, the big objective for all, and the stage promises spectacle from the first tee
The tournament that can change everything
South African MJ Daffue currently tops the overall HotelPlanner Tour standings, although his absence from Isla Canela opens up the picture completely; he can still pick up points from the DP in Austria and retain his lead, something the players close behind him will try to deny as they look to make a statement
Among them stands out the Spanish Pablo Ereño, second in the rankings and one of the season’s big names after his victory at the Challenge de Catalunya. The Spanish golfer arrives this week with genuine chances of taking the circuit lead
Another focus will be on British Will Enefer, currently third thanks to three top-10s this year, including his win in Cape Town. Young Frenchman Maxence Giboudot, 3rd in the season opener and 2nd in the most recent event in Denmark, is coming in strong, and German Deon Germishuys has also shown signs with two top-10s; not to be overlooked is Chris Wood, winner in Italy, who will fight to the last hole to return to the DP World Tour. All of them arrive at the Challenge de España aiming to headline one of the most important weeks of the year
The importance of the tournament is further magnified by the circuit’s points system. A win at Isla Canela awards 320 points, while second place earns 220 and third 120, totals capable of completely reshaping the overall standings in just four days
Isla Canela Links, a test of precision and patience
The layout at Isla Canela Links will be one of the main protagonists. Exposed to Atlantic winds, with fast greens and areas where strategy is crucial, the course forces players to combine patience, precision and adaptability from the first tee. It is not a course that forgives lapses in concentration and will require players to blend accuracy, patience and a huge ability to adapt
“Depending on how the course is set up, short game will be very important. It’s not a long course, so if you have good wedges and solid around-green play, you can post very low rounds here,” says Joel Moscatel, winner of the Challenge de España in 2024 and a course expert. The Catalan is ready to return to the DP World Tour, “I’m at a level where I feel comfortable, I don’t see any reason why I can’t do it again,” he explained. “Obviously I feel I already know how to do it, but at the same time I need to play really well. When I look back, I remember how well I was playing and how well I was doing things. The game has to be in a very good place to achieve it. My year on the DP was a learning experience, not only in golf but about myself. I realised the areas I need to work on and I’m on it. I’m playing well. I’ve worked hard with my team both physically and technically and also on the mental side. Little by little I’m improving in everything.”
Stories, talent and a tournament with its own identity
Beyond the competition, the Challenge de España continues to establish itself as one of the most characterful events on the European calendar. The mix of young talents seeking to break through and experienced players aiming to return to the elite makes the tournament a constant source of sporting and personal stories
One of the standout aspects of this edition will also be the importance of the work of the caddies, key figures in professional golf. This week will see the debut of the pairing of Pablo Ereño and Peio Iguarán, a caddie with extensive experience alongside some of the best players on the DP World Tour. Also present will be Raúl Quirós, long-time caddie of Pablo Larrazábal, accompanying his friend Alejandro Cañizares, while Álvaro Quirós will experience a very special moment competing for the first time with his father as caddie
A history full of big names
The Challenge de España is now into its 27th edition and continues to write important chapters in European golf. Since 1999 it has been missed only once, in 2005, returning a year later with force at the Centro Nacional de Golf, where a very young Martin Kaymer was already shining, a future world champion
Throughout its history the tournament has crowned major international figures, including American Brooks Koepka, who years later would reach world number one. Koepka set the record for the largest winning margin in the tournament’s history in 2013, winning by ten shots at Tecina Golf
The Challenge de España has also had a marked international flavour: six Frenchmen, five Spaniards, five Swedes, three Brits, as well as champions from Portugal, the Czech Republic, Germany and the United States have lifted the trophy in its various editions
Only one player has managed to win more than once: Welshman Rhys Davies, champion in 2009 and 2015. In addition, Frenchman Martin Couvra remains the only amateur to have won the tournament, a feat achieved in 2023 before turning professional. On four occasions a play-off was needed to decide the winner of the Challenge de España

Inaugural ProAm of the Challenge de España
Today the ProAm that kicks off the Challenge de España took place, with 28 teams of three amateurs competing, each having the opportunity to play 9 holes with one professional and 9 with another. The winning team was the amateurs Montse San Francisco, Stefano Marsoner and Hubertus Trommelen, who were paired with professionals Jacopo Vecchi Fossa and Lorenzo Scalise

Tomorrow, Thursday, the Challenge de España at Isla Canela Links will begin at 08:00 from two tees, with the last groups teeing off at 15:15
