If this were a job interview, Pablo Ereño (-10) would be absolutely nailing it.
Through 36 holes at Royal Cape Town Golf Club, the Madrid native has produced a brilliant display of all-round golf. He played like an angel on Thursday to sign for a bogey-free 66, and on Friday he brought out the other side of the game — the one you need when things don’t quite flow. In fact, he did far more than simply survive. Ereño ground out an excellent 68 in much tougher conditions to move to the top of the leaderboard at the CIRCA Cape Town Golf Open on the HotelPlanner Tour. The best view in the house.
Ereño did almost anything he wanted with the ball on Thursday. It was one of those dream rounds where nearly every shot starts exactly on the line you see, flies the shape you intend, lands the number you’ve got in your head. The kind of day that sends you to bed with a grin you can’t wipe off. But we all know this sport doesn’t hand out identical days very often.
Especially not when nature decides to rewrite your plans.
Friday brought a heavy wind to the old South African layout in Cape Town, and that’s when golf changes. It’s no longer point-and-shoot, no longer a simple case of trusting that everything will behave because you’re in control. Other variables creep in, doubts appear, and suddenly life gets complicated. Ereño, though, has shown over these first two days that he has every tool in the box.
Yesterday he was piling up birdie looks. Today, when he needed to rescue the round, he did. Holes 10 and 11 were the clearest example: a superb par followed by a quality birdie. On 10, he was completely out of position and had to manufacture a huge, “ridiculous” hook just to save par. On 11, he followed with a sensational third shot struck with a 7-iron.
“I feel really good,” Ereño told Ten Golf. “I’m solid in every part of my game — off the tee, into the greens, around the greens, putting… everything feels good. Hopefully we can keep it going through the weekend.”
He also produced two excellent pars at 13 and 15, both par 3s playing straight into the wind and turning into proper little monsters.
Ereño leads by one over Marc Warren, Tapio Pulkkanen, Jason Roets and Canon Claycomb. Two shots back sits Galicia’s Santi Tarrio (-8) after a superb round — matching the best score of the morning with six birdies and a lone bogey, underlining how well this classic, 19th-century design suits his eye.
Further down the Spanish contingent, Borja Virto (-3) safely booked his place for the weekend with a 70, highlighted by a brilliant birdie at his final hole (the 9th) — one that could prove vital once the afternoon wave and the wind have had their say. Lucas Vacarisas (-2) is more on the bubble. When he signed his card he was inside the cut line, but everything will depend on how the conditions develop. If the wind keeps blowing, he should be playing on.
By contrast, Albert Boneta (-1) is out for now — and would only sneak in if the afternoon turns brutal and the cut drops to one under. Joel Moscatel (+3) and Javier Barcos (+3) have also missed out.
