The Challenge de España arrives at Isla Canela Golf Links at one of the most exciting and decisive moments of the HotelPlanner Tour season. With the race for DP World Tour cards entering a crucial phase, Huelva will bring together much of the best European and Spanish talent in a week that could shape the immediate future of many players.
Because the HotelPlanner Tour has already moved beyond the season’s opening. Isla Canela will host the ninth event of the calendar, a moment when every shot begins to carry enormous value in the ranking that determines who will secure promotion to the DP World Tour at the end of the year. And there, precisely, is where the new Spanish generation is starting to make its mark.
The historic victory of Pablo Ereño at the Challenge de Catalunya has been a genuine explosion for young Spanish golf. The Madrid native claimed his first professional title at Fontanals Golf and climbed to the second position in the HotelPlanner Tour, confirming himself as one of the season’s biggest breakthroughs. With only a few months as a professional, Ereño is no longer just a prospect: he is one of the most in-form players on the circuit.
But the great moment for Spanish golf doesn’t end there
Last week, Juan Salama produced a spectacular third place in Denmark, another result that confirms the huge quality and depth of a generation that is starting to look directly towards the DP World Tour. At this stage of the calendar, placing in the top positions of the ranking is becoming key. But even more important will be staying there over the coming months, enduring the pressure, the demands of travel and the consistency required by one of the most competitive circuits in international golf.
Because on the HotelPlanner Tour one good week is not enough. The real challenge is to stay at the top throughout the season to secure one of the coveted DP World Tour cards. And precisely for that reason, the Challenge de España takes on an even more special significance this season.
The tournament will bring together in Isla Canela several Spanish players who already know what it means to win this year. In addition to Ereño himself, Alejandro Rodríguez Andreu will be there, recent winner of the Gösser Open on the Alps Tour, one of the historic events on the European satellite circuit.
Alongside them, spectators will be able to enjoy some of the most promising Spanish golfers of the moment such as members of the ProSpain Team de la RFEG, Joseba Torres, Javier Barcos, Asier Aguirre, Alejandro Aguilera, Josep María Serra, Eduard Rousaud, Albert Boneta and Lucas Vacarisas representatives of a generation extremely well prepared and accustomed from a very young age to compete at the highest level.
The Spanish contingent will also mix youth and experience with names highly recognisable in national golf such as Álvaro Quirós, winner of seven DP World Tour titles and a former world number 21; Alejandro Cañizares, winner of two DP World Tour tournaments; Pep Anglés, Scott Fernández and Pedro Oriol, adding even more quality to one of the strongest editions of recent years.
Joel Moscatel, winner of the Challenge de España in 2024 and Santiago Tarrío in 2021, will also be among the protagonists in this edition as they attempt to defend the title, a trophy that once served as a springboard to the DP World Tour

But the Challenge de España will be much more than a great sporting opportunity for the players. It will also be a unique occasion for fans
Ayamonte will experience next week one of the biggest golf events in its recent history. Isla Canela Golf Links will probably host the highest level of golf ever seen in the area, with players who have won on the DP World Tour, contested Majors, been part of the Ryder Cup or who are destined to become future stars of world golf
And all of that, moreover, with free admission for the public
The tournament will allow fans to experience top-level professional golf up close, walk alongside some of Europe’s best players and discover before anyone else many of the names who will likely be competing in the biggest stages of world golf in a few years’ time
Because that is precisely the magic of the Challenge de España: you never know which young player who fights today at Isla Canela will be lifting titles on the DP World Tour or at major international tournaments tomorrow
Today, Tuesday, the players are practising on the course to achieve their best performance in the Challenge de España which will kick off with an inaugural ProAm tomorrow, Wednesday, and the competition will be played from Thursday to Sunday at Isla Canela Links
The Challenge de España is supported by the HotelPlanner Tour, la Real Federación Española de Golf, la Junta de Andalucía, la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf y el Consejo Superior de Deportes, as well as Allianz, AON, BCD Sports, Kyocera, Volvo, Scalpers, Pesasur, Nevadabobs, Bodegas Juan Gil, Mahou, Solán de Cabras, Revel, Asociación Armadores de Punta del Moral, Licor Mediterráneo and Titleist, under the organisation of JGolf
