Next week, Isla Canela Golf Links will once again take centre stage in European golf with the celebration of the Challenge de España, one of the most historic, prestigious and well-established events on the HotelPlanner Tour. This year’s edition marks the tournament’s 27th anniversary at one of the most decisive and competitive moments of the season.

As the calendar enters its most demanding stretch and the race for DP World Tour cards becomes tighter than ever, the Andalusian event stands out as a strategic stop on the Road to Mallorca. Margins in the rankings are razor-thin, with dozens of players separated by only a handful of shots in a season defined by parity, pressure and the constant emergence of new talent.

For Jaime Salaverri, Vice President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the Challenge de España represents “one of the most important tournaments for the development of both Spanish and European professional golf.” Salaverri highlighted the enormous value of the event as a platform for the next generation of players: “The level on the HotelPlanner Tour keeps getting higher and the Challenge de España has established itself as a tournament that prepares players for the leap to the DP World Tour. Many past winners of this tournament have gone on to succeed at the very highest level of world golf.”

Salaverri also praised the current strength of Spain’s young golfing generation, particularly following Pablo Ereño’s recent victory at the Challenge de Catalunya.

“Pablo Ereño’s win in Fontanals is proof of the incredible talent coming through,” he said. “We are seeing a generation of players who are extremely well prepared, ambitious and unafraid to compete at the highest level. For the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, it is a source of great pride to see tournaments like the Challenge de España helping to launch these careers.”

He also underlined the historical significance of an event that remains a benchmark within the European calendar.

“The Challenge de España has always been a very special tournament. It has history, prestige and an outstanding list of champions. Winning here often marks a turning point in a player’s career.”

In that context, the Challenge de España once again becomes much more than just a tournament. It will once again be a stage where youth, experience and ambition come together in pursuit of a common goal: reaching the elite of European golf.

Located between natural marshlands and the Atlantic Ocean, Isla Canela Golf Links is one of the most unique and distinctive layouts on the schedule. Wind, strategy and adaptability will once again prove decisive on a course that demands creativity, patience and precision, very much in the spirit of traditional links golf.

The event will bring together some of the leading players on the HotelPlanner Tour, many of whom know that every tournament is now crucial in the battle for promotion to the DP World Tour. Spain will once again play a major role in a tournament that holds special significance for Spanish golf.

A tournament with elite DNA

Few events on the HotelPlanner Tour can boast a résumé as strong as that of the Challenge de España. Throughout nearly three decades of history, the tournament has not only crowned champions — it has also served as a launchpad for future stars of world golf.

The most iconic example is Brooks Koepka. The American won the tournament in 2013 at Tecina Golf, years before becoming one of the biggest stars in world golf and winning five Major championships. His name directly connects the Challenge de España with the elite of the global game.

But Koepka is far from the only success story. The tournament’s roll of honour also includes names such as Victor Perez and Antoine Rozner, both multiple winners on the European circuit, as well as Santiago Tarrío, one of the great recent stories in Spanish golf.

The Challenge de España has therefore established itself as one of the premier showcases for emerging European talent — a tournament capable of identifying the future stars of international golf.

That is precisely why every edition carries special significance. Many of the young players competing this week at Isla Canela Links are pursuing exactly what Koepka, Perez and Rozner once pursued before them: taking the definitive step towards the highest level of the game.

Nearly three decades of history

Since its inaugural edition in 1999, the Challenge de España has been played at some of Spain’s most iconic golf courses — including El Saler, Tecina Golf, Izki Golf, Novo Sancti Petri, Fontanals and Real Club Sevilla Golf — building a unique identity within the European circuit.

For all these reasons, the Challenge de España arrives at Isla Canela Golf Links as much more than just another tournament on the calendar: it is a key moment in the season and one of the stages where the future of European golf begins to be written.

The Challenge de España is promoted by the HotelPlanner Tour, with the support of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the Government of Andalusia, the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation and the Spanish Sports Council, as well as Allianz, AON, BCD Sports, Kyocera, Volvo, Scalpers, Pesasur, Nevadabobs, Bodegas Juan Gil, Mahou, Solán de Cabras, Revel, Asociación Armadores de Punta del Moral, Licor Mediterráneo and Titleist, under the organisation of JGolf.
