The Jonsson Workwear Durban Open will be decided this Sunday in a single round of 18 holes after the third round was cancelled this Saturday due to heavy rains that have flooded the Durban Country Club.
The big news for Spanish golf is that Galician Santi Tarrío maintains the lead of the tournament, while Madrid’s Pablo Ereño will face the decisive round just two strokes behind, fully involved in the fight for the title.
The organisers were forced to suspend the round without a single ball being struck. The overnight rain on South Africa’s east coast left large areas of the course unplayable and, after seven and a half hours of delay, the final decision was made to cancel play.
Thus, the tournament is reduced to 54 holes, with the final round taking place this Sunday if the weather permits. Play is scheduled to start at 6:20 in the morning (local time).
The tournament director, Chris Wallace, regretted the situation and explained that the rain was especially intense, with more than 100 millimetres falling overnight, a circumstance that left several holes underwater. The organisers considered different alternatives, including adjustments to the course, but ultimately it was not possible to proceed with the round.
Wallace also wanted to highlight the work of the course maintenance staff throughout the morning and expressed his confidence that they can get the course ready to complete the 54 holes this Sunday.
As things stand, the outcome is compressed into a single round, with Tarrío in the lead and Ereño in pursuit, in a final round that could bring great news for Spanish golf in South Africa.
