Quim Vidal (-7) had 170 metres to the flag on hole 11, the second of the day for him. He was coming from making a birdie. He grabbed the 7 iron and hit a great shot. Close to a hole in one. Given birdie. Two less in two holes. He would still make one more on the 12th. Immaculate start. Launched. The Spanish golfer has signed a magnificent round of 67 strokes on the second day of the Big Green Egg German Challenge and has placed himself in sixth position, four strokes behind the lead held by the South African Robin Williams (-11). Basically, Quim has shown a glimpse of his potential, has said here I am and has entered the fight for victory at the Wittelsbacher Golfclub in Germany.
Vidal has again signed a great golf. Very solid. As he has been doing in his latest tournaments. In fact, the Catalan player has already accumulated ten consecutive rounds playing under par on the Challenge Tour. Today, after that great start, he has more or less kept the pace. Well supported by a putt that today has behaved better than on previous days, he has made a total of six birdies. Perhaps, the most important of all was on his last hole of the day, on the 9th, since his only mistake had come precisely on the 8th. To finish with a bogey on such a good day would have been a bad taste, but he knew how to turn it around.
So, Vidal is in the fight for his first victory on the Challenge Tour. It is his 30th tournament on this circuit and his best result has been a third in Le Vaudreuil, an event that curiously another Spaniard, Joel Moscatel, won.
Quim is not the only bullet of the Armada in German lands. David Borda (-5) is very well placed, with still margin to give himself a chance on Sunday. Today he has made 68 strokes with six birdies, curiously the opposite of yesterday. His best holes have been from 10 to 13. Likewise, Borja Virto (-3) has not said his last word either. He signed the par, 71 strokes, and is within distance. On the other hand, great comeback from Víctor Pastor (-1), who has passed the cut with a sensational card today of 67 strokes, and another cut passed for Emilio Cuartero (-1), who has made 70. The cross of the week has been for Javier Sainz and Scott Fernández, who have been left out.
At the top, Robin Williams, a player who every day that passes knocks more forcefully on the door of victory and the DP World Tour, has a one stroke advantage over Oihan Guillamoundeguy (-10), a golfer who was born 47 days after Ángel Ayora, also from ’64. Also with -10 are Deon Germishuys and veteran David Horsey.
