Iván Cantero did not finish the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in the best way. The two final bogeys on the 17th and 18th cast a grey shadow over a very positive week and a Sunday that he will remember for a long time. The Asturian was full of praise for the Englishman and commended his friendliness and kindness throughout the 18 holes.
That Cantero has a good golfing and personal opinion of Fleetwood may not surprise anyone. In fact, in the latest humorous video released by the DP World Tour, where some players perform exercises to go viral, Fleetwood is asked to get angrier and make enemies to increase his popularity, to which the Brit responds that he can’t do it because he likes everyone.
As the final round in Dubai concluded, Ten Golf and Par 4 Media wanted to know Fleetwood’s opinion on Cantero firsthand. In case anyone doubted, the Englishman graciously attended to the two Spanish media outlets. Regarding the impression the Asturian made on him, Fleetwood was full of praise.
Fleetwood on Cantero: “I think he has a lot of talent and a lot of potential, I think he’s going to have a very good year”
“Honestly, I know how disappointed he will feel coming off the last hole given how it ended after fighting so hard all day. I think he has a very bright future, he’s a very powerful player, with a great attitude, a lovely guy and yes, I told him as I said goodbye on the 18th, I really think he’s going to have a very, very good year. He just needs to trust and believe in himself, I think he has a lot of talent and a lot of potential,” he assures.
Finally, regarding what advice he would give, the Ryder Cup hero from Italy a year and a half ago assures that “I always tell players to focus on themselves. Obviously, you have to learn things from other players during the first years on the tour, but trust in your game and that your game is good enough to work. He is very powerful, hits the ball very far and should know how to take advantage of that. He has many, many, many strengths, but he just needs to maintain a good attitude and keep progressing as he is doing. As long as he trusts himself, he’ll do well,” he concludes.
