The DP World India Championship continues to gain international shine and appeal. The tournament, which will be held from 16 to 19 October at the Delhi Golf Club, will feature two true figures of world golf: Viktor Hovland and Shane Lowry, both members of the European team for the Ryder Cup to be held next week.
The championship, with a prize fund of 4 million dollars, thus becomes the event with the largest prize purse ever offered by the DP World Tour in India, and will bring together a truly luxurious line-up, which already confirmed Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and local idol Shubhankar Sharma.
Lowry, winner of the Open Championship in 2019 at Royal Portrush, will return to Delhi fifteen years after competing there in the Avantha Masters. “Having the opportunity to play in front of fans from all over the world is one of the best parts of my job. I am looking forward to returning to Delhi for this first edition of the DP World India Championship,” said the Irishman, who will face his third consecutive Ryder Cup as a key player in the European team.
Hovland, on the other hand, will make his competitive debut in India. The Norwegian, the first player from his country to win both on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, arrives after having claimed his eleventh professional title this year at the Valspar Championship. “I have heard a lot about Delhi as a city and I am very excited to make my debut in India on a course with so much history. It will be a great event and I hope to enjoy the whole experience,” said the Scandinavian player.
The tournament, co-sanctioned with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), represents a decisive step in the consolidation of professional golf in the Asian country. Following the success of the Hero Indian Open, the DP World India Championship places India on the map as one of the most important emerging destinations on the world calendar.
From the organisation, Yuvraj Narayan, Group Deputy CEO and CFO of DP World, highlighted the strategic relevance of this new tournament: “The DP World India Championship reinforces our commitment to India, a priority market for us. We believe there is enormous potential for golf in the region, and this event is key in our long-term vision to support and grow the game.”
The Delhi event will also be the eighth of the nine events that make up the phase known as ‘Back 9’ of the Race to Dubai 2025, before the grand finale at the DP World Tour Play-Offs and the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates (Dubai) next November.
With four Ryder Cup stars already confirmed, along with the presence of the great local figure, Sharma, the DP World India Championship presents itself as one of the major events of the season, both in sporting terms and in its international projection.
