Great news for Ángel Ayora. According to Ten Golf, the golfer from Málaga has been chosen to receive one of the invitations for the Puerto Rico Open, a PGA Tour tournament that will take place from March 6 to 9 at the Grand Reserve Golf Club. It will be his second consecutive participation in this tournament and also his second foray into the American circuit. This is a great achievement by All in Sports, his representation agency.
Ayora already played this tournament with an invitation last year, and things went quite well for him. The young 20-year-old player from Marbella, who was then playing on the Challenge Tour, made the cut with two rounds of 72 and 68 strokes. The weekend didn’t go too well for him, and he lost positions with two cards of 75 and 72, but the overall experience was really positive for his first experience in the world’s top circuit.
Now he will have the opportunity to repeat and, if possible, improve on that first performance. It’s not his circuit, and there’s no pressure. It’s a week where he can only gain. In fact, as you know, if he were to win, he would directly secure the American circuit card. A great result would also allow him to attract more attention from the PGA Tour and, why not, receive more invitations in the future. He is one of those players who is followed on the radar across the pond.
Thus, Ayora’s most immediate schedule is the Magical Kenya Open next week, as you know the European circuit is on a break these days, the Open de Sudáfrica the following week, which is played in Durban and where he has also been assured an invitation since it’s not clear if players coming from the Challenge Tour and the Puerto Rico Open will enter. He will not play the Joburg Open, as it coincides with the same week as Puerto Rico. The most challenging part of that schedule is the journey between Durban and Puerto Rico. It’s 35 hours of flight. All for the sake of playing again on the PGA Tour, after all, the ultimate goal for most golfers.
Speaking of schedule and invitations, the other big news is that, as reflected on the European Tour website, Eugenio López Chacarra has also received an invitation to play next week in the Kenya Open. It will be his first tournament on the DP World Tour in 2025 and a first opportunity to get hooked on the European circuit. He would need a victory to secure the card or a top 10 to continue playing the following week. That will be his main goal. Let’s remember that Chacarra already played this year in the International Series de India and delivered a remarkable performance with a final top 5.
