– David Puig has claimed his first career victory on the DP World Tour this Sunday, marking the third win of his career. He achieved this in his first tournament on the European circuit as a full member. Today’s triumph at the BMW Australian PGA Championship adds to the International Series Singapore in 2023 and the IRS Prima Malaysian Open in 2024, both on the Asian Tour. It is the fifth time he has led on a Sunday and the second time he has secured the win.
– Puig, logically, becomes the first winner of the DP World Tour for the 2026 season. It is the eleventh Spanish victory in the inaugural tournament of a European circuit season. The previous ten were as follows (by season, not necessarily by calendar year):

– Puig is the 37th different Spaniard to win a tournament on the DP World Tour. He follows Eugenio Chacarra and Alex del Rey on this list, both first-time winners in 2025. The last time the European circuit saw three first-time victories by Spanish golfers in a calendar year was in 2006: José Manuel Lara at the Hong Kong Open, Álvaro Quirós at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and Alejandro Cañizares at the Imperial Collection Russian Open.
– In addition to being the 37th different Spaniard to win on the European circuit, the young man from La Garriga has achieved the 211th Spanish victory in total. The first was by Antonio Garrido in 1972. He also pockets a cheque for €239,442.88.
– Obviously, being the first tournament of the season, David automatically becomes the first leader of the Race to Dubai 2026. He also takes the lead in the Opening Swing standings, the first segment of tournaments on the DP World Tour, which includes this BMW Australian PGA Championship, the Crown Australian Open, Nedbank Golf Challenge, Alfred Dunhill Championship, and the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. Remember that the winner of each swing gains direct access to all the tournaments of the Back Swing, something Puig already had guaranteed by his category, and earns a bonus of $200,000. He is currently the favourite, although we will have to see what happens in the remaining four tournaments.
– Puig is the third Spaniard to win a tournament in Australia. The first was Seve Ballesteros, precisely this same championship in 1981, while the second was Miguel Ángel Martín in 1997 with the Heineken Classic in Perth.
– David is going to experience a significant jump in the world rankings following this victory, the most important of his career. He will move from 172nd place to around 115th. The highest he could rise is 112th, but it will depend on what other players earn in the tournaments taking place this weekend. The first direct conclusion is that he is once again in contention for participation in the PGA Championship, reserved for approximately just over the top 100 in the world rankings. This triumph aids a possible invitation. Additionally, he will arrive with high morale at the Australian Open next week, a tournament that offers a ticket to the Masters Tournament and another to the Open Championship.
*The Masters Tournament has not always been part of the DP World Tour calendar, so for some years, the first tournament of the season was different. However, for some time now, the Masters has been incorporated into every year of the European circuit, and therefore at TenGolf, we decided to follow the same criterion currently used by the European circuit.
