Alejandro del Rey, as one might expect, is happy and content with the progress of this Ras Al Khaimah Championship. He is the sole leader and stands out after three rounds, and this Saturday, he also delivered a bogey-free card after hitting only three fairways at the Al Hamra Golf Club.
“I am very happy. I think I probably didn’t play as well as the last few days, but my short game has been incredible today. I got a bit lucky, probably a couple of good bounces on holes 10, 12, and 18, and I also found the ball well placed in the sand a couple of times, but as I told my caddie, you have to know how to take advantage of luck, and that’s what we’ve done,” says the Spanish player.
The question is: given the fact that he hit so few fairways and will start tomorrow with an advantage, will he modify his strategy in any way? Del Rey is very clear about it: “In principle, there should be no change in the strategy. We would only change something if the wind direction changed, because in that case, we might have a hole where we could hit a different club, but it seems the wind will blow the same, so we’ll keep doing the same,” he clarifies. And he adds with a bit of humour: “It seems that hitting only three fairways, you can make six under on this course, so I don’t think we’ll change anything. Besides, the only time I changed today, when I hit iron off the tee on hole 13, I also missed the fairway…”
The Madrid native has not yet won on the DP World Tour, but he has done so in other settings and hopes that experience will help him. “I have won in many tours and different places around the world, and I feel like I know how to do it. You just have to trust yourself, go out on the course, and give your best. I think I know how to close tournaments, so I’ll try to do it tomorrow,” he concluded.
