Nicolai Hojgaard has withdrawn from the Continental Europe team for the Team Cup due to illness. This breaking news has led to a double consequence. The first is that we won’t be able to see the Hojgaard twins playing together. The second is that he needs to be replaced by another player, and the choice of Luke Donald and Francesco Molinari is Julien Guerrier. Even so, Jorge Campillo still doesn’t have a place in the team…
Guerrier joined the competition this Thursday. He lives in the United Arab Emirates, so it wasn’t too difficult for him to travel to Abu Dhabi to join Francesco. The Frenchman won the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters last October, his first victory on the DP World Tour, and is currently just ahead of Jorge Campillo in the Ryder Cup Europe rankings. In any case, if we consider recent trajectory and evolution, from a sports performance perspective, the Spaniard’s merits are greater. That’s the nature of handpicked decisions; they never please everyone.
As it stands, the Continental Europe team is composed of four Danes: Rasmus Hojgaard, Thorbjorn Olesen, Niklas Nordgaard, and Rasmus Neergaard Petersen; four Frenchmen: Antoine Rozner, Matthieu Pavon, Julien Guerrier, and Romain Langasque; and two Italians: Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero.
As for the Great Britain and Ireland team, it includes nine Englishmen: Jordan Smith, Matt Wallace, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Aaron Rai, Tommy Fleetwood, Paul Waring, Matthew Jordan, and Laurie Canter; and one Northern Irishman: Tom McKibbin.
The Team Cup kicks off this Friday with the five fourball matches. On Saturday, there will be two sessions of five foursome matches, and on Sunday, the ten singles matches will be played. All players participate in each of the sessions. Continental Europe is the defending champion, having won the title in 2023.
