Manuel Elvira (-4), with a great round of 68 strokes featuring five birdies and just one bogey, has started strongly at the Betfred British Masters, a DP World Tour tournament taking place from today until Sunday at the The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield, England. Once the morning session was completed, the Cantabrian golfer appears among the top five on the leaderboard, just two strokes behind the provisional leader, South African Thomas Akien (-6). At 29 years of age, Elvira, who is ranked 56th in the Race to Dubai, is seeking what would be his first victory on the European circuit.
From the wide Spanish representation in the tournament, only he and Alejandro del Rey (-1), among those who played in the first session of the first round, have managed to score under par. Eugenio Chacarra (+1) and Pablo Ereno (+1) are relatively close to the cut line with chances tomorrow to continue fighting to be in the weekend, while Joel Moscatel (+2), Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+2), and Rafa Cabrera Bello (+2) would need to recover one more stroke if they want to continue in the tournament from Friday.

Albert Boneta, Ángel Hidalgo, Jorge Campillo, Ángel Ayora, Nacho Elvira, Alfredo García Heredia, and Iván Cantero will complete the afternoon session, in play, rounding out the roster of the Armada in this summer event of the European tour. Matt Fitzpatrick (-5), one of the tournament’s big stars, holds the second provisional position, while players like Alex Noren (-4), Matt Wallace (-4), or the Dane Rasmus Hojgaard (-3), who is looking to secure his spot on the European Ryder team, are also already high on the table.
