Joaquín Niemann is set to play the BMW PGA Championship starting from the upcoming 11th of September at Wentworth, the flagship tournament of the DP World Tour where this year a truly luxurious participation is expected. The Chilean, a full member of the European circuit, will once again meet his great rival of the last two seasons in LIV Golf, Jon Rahm, who is also going to compete in the tournament.
Niemann will play at Wentworth for the first time in his career, while Rahm is going to play the tournament for the fourth time. It should be noted that the player from Barrika has not done badly at this venue, where his worst result was a fourth place in 2023, as he also boasts two second places in 2019 and 2022.
It is expected that in this 2025 edition of the BMW PGA Championship the entire European Ryder Cup team will gather, once Luke Donald has announced his six picks on the upcoming 1st of September. Additionally, we might find a very prominent player from the US team at the event, such as Bryson DeChambeau. To date, Niemann has only played one tournament of the regular DP World Tour calendar this season, the Australian Open, which took place in December 2024 and where he finished in fifth position. With that result, in addition to what he has accumulated in the Majors, the Chilean occupies the 103rd position in the Race to Dubai, a position he hopes to improve at Wentworth, with the aim, even, of getting into the last two events of the DP World Tour calendar, with a restricted field of participants, Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Finale.
In any case, the Chilean has not closed the door to playing another European circuit tournament before the final sprint in the Emirates. It should be considered that he needs to play four tournaments of the regular calendar to maintain his playing rights on the DP World Tour and the BMW at Wentworth will be his second appearance. The Open de España, for example, could be a possibility, especially after it was revealed that this year’s winner at the Club de Campo in Madrid will receive an invitation to play the Masters and the Open in 2026, major tournaments where the Chilean currently does not have assured entry. In any case, for now, only the Wentworth event is confirmed on his schedule.
