This Thursday marks the start of the Nexo Championship at the Trump International Golf Links in Scotland, and the big news for the Armada is called Pablo Ereño. The Madrid golfer has received an invitation and will make his debut on the DP World Tour. He has never played on the European circuit before, not even as an amateur. In fact, it will be the sixth professional tournament of his career, following the five he has played on the Korn Ferry Tour since the end of June.
Ereño will thus become the 392nd Spanish golfer to play on the DP World Tour. He follows in the footsteps of Albert Boneta, the last of the Armada’s debutants. Boneta made his debut in Mauritius last December. He started with a round of 71 strokes, although he ended up missing the cut. Of those 391 Spaniards who have participated in the European circuit before Ereño, a total of 36 have achieved at least one victory. The latest to join this club was Alejandro del Rey, thanks to his triumph in Ras al Khaimah at the beginning of the season.
Ereño will tee off on the 1st tee for the first time on the DP World Tour this Thursday at two in the afternoon, local time, and will play alongside German Jannik de Bruyn and French Julien Brun. It is a one-off invitation that will help him gain experience. The main goal for this year is the PGA Tour and DP World Tour qualifying schools, where he will try to secure playing rights for next year. Pablo finished his studies at UCLA about two months ago and turned professional.
In his first five professional tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour, things haven’t gone too well for him. He missed four cuts, and his best performance was a 47th place, although during the first three days he flirted with the top 10 of the tournament.
