It was necessary to give the best in the final round… and Scott Fernández (-7) has done so with flying colours. The player from Granada signed a brilliant round of 67 strokes this Friday at Donnington Grove (England), allowing him to advance to the second stage of the DP World Tour School. With a total of seven under par, he becomes the third Spaniard to pass the initial cut, after Borja Martín and Pablo Ereño.
Scott was two strokes off the target and needed to deliver a great performance in the fourth round. The round for the player from Granada couldn’t have started better: an eagle on the 2nd hole to ignite the spark of a decisive day. From there, he displayed a high-level game, with five birdies, one bogey, and a double bogey. He sealed his qualification with a final birdie on the 18th, securing his pass. A spectacular card at the right moment.
Less fortune befell Gonzalo Leal at Arlandastad Golf (Sweden). The Andalusian dreamed of qualifying thanks to the first nine holes played at one under par, but four bogeys in the final stretch stopped him in his tracks. He finished with +4, three strokes off the target. Two strokes further back was Asier Aguirre (+5). José Luis Adarraga finished his contest at +14.
With this week’s result, seven events have already been played in this first phase of the School, and three Spaniards will be in the semi-finals: Borja Martín, Pablo Ereño, and now Scott Fernández. There are still three more tournaments to be played, with the next event in Denmark, where Víctor García Broto, Pablo Ribeiro, and Esteban Vázquez will participate.
The challenge is not minor: slightly more than 800 players have started the first phase, and around 150 will reach the semi-finals to be held in Spain at the end of October.
