Sergio García wants to return to play on the PGA Tour and also intends to be captain of the Ryder Cup. That said, neither can be taken for granted. He will have to fight for them. The news is that the golfer from Borriol is willing to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty.
Sergio appeared before the media this Wednesday at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, a few hours before the start of the Open de España, the tournament in which he made his debut 30 years ago. In speaking to the media, he wanted to clarify that he is not yet released from his contract with LIV Golf, despite some reports to the contrary from the United States. “There are still things to be done, it’s not completely resolved”, he explains.
Sergio’s main objective, for which he wants to be completely freed from his commitment to LIV, is to be able to secure new sponsorships or open doors to other tours with the assurance that the Saudi league is no longer involved. In other words, that it will not retain those potential earnings or any part of them and that it will not influence other tours.
Does this mean that García will in no way be part of the new LIV 2.0? Sergio has not ruled it out, although it seems evident that his plans are heading in a different direction. His overarching plan for 2027 is to accumulate as many points as possible to qualify for the Ryder Cup, move up the world ranking and play the four majors. If we look at these objectives, it seems clear that Sergio’s path runs through the DP World Tour, since the doors of the PGA Tour are currently closed.
That being so, although Sergio has not confirmed it, it can practically be taken for granted that next year he will play the entire DP World Tour schedule with the firm intention of playing the four majors and the Ryder Cup. In fact, he revealed this Wednesday that he has already spoken with Luke Donald to set out these plans. He also told the captain that if he fails to qualify, he is willing to help the team in any way, for example by serving as an assistant. This is more complicated, as the current DP World Tour regulations would have to be changed.
As of today, Sergio cannot be vice-captain or captain because he ceased to be a member of the DP World Tour of his own accord when he left for LIV. He is, precisely, talking with Donald and the DP World Tour to change this situation. We’ll see whether the European circuit is open to changing its rule in some way.
In this regard, Sergio has confessed that he wants to return to the PGA Tour when possible, especially with the PGA Tour Champions in mind. “It’s something I’d like, to return to the PGA Tour in the future, especially with the Champions in mind. I’m 47 and I’d like to play that tour when I turn 50, especially the majors on the Champions Tour. It would be nice”, he commented.
García revealed today at the Club de Campo what the main goals of his life will be in the coming years. That is, what would be the crowning achievement of his career. At the very top he places winning the Open Championship, then playing the Ryder Cup again or at least having the possibility of being captain. Obviously, the 2031 Ryder Cup in Spain is on the horizon. “I’ve spoken with Luke and I’ve told him that I’m going to do everything possible to be on the team in 2027 and if I don’t make it I’ve made it clear he can count on me to help the team in whatever way he deems appropriate”.
