The charismatic Shane Lowry, currently ranked 30th in the World Ranking, has confirmed his presence at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid, which will take place at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 26 to 29 September.
The Irish golfer is another interesting focus of attention, adding to those generated by the Englishman Tommy Fleetwood – silver medallist at the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games – and the Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, defender of the title won in the 2023 edition.
“In my first year on the Tour, back in 2009, I played in what was then the Madrid Masters and I remember having a great time,” said Lowry. “Madrid is an incredible city to visit and, from what I’ve heard, the Club de Campo is a beautiful course, with stunning views of the city centre. So I’m looking forward to playing in the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid and returning to one of my favourite cities in Europe.”
With seven notable victories to his name, spread over four on the DP World Tour and three on the PGA Tour, Shane Lowry definitively jumped to fame when he won the 2019 British Open.
Known for his affability and the high quality of his game, Shane Lowry had the honour of carrying, along with athlete Sarah Lavin, the Irish flag during the opening ceremony of the Olympics held in the French capital, highlighting the popular appeal of a golfer who crosses borders and divides his performances between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.
A lover of all sports, but especially Gaelic football, rugby and football, Shane Lowry was self-taught in his early days in the sport of golf, which began at the age of 13 at a Pitch & Putt in the town of Clara, in his native county of Offaly.
His short game skills increased on the greens of Esker Hills, the starting point of a prolific career that reached its peak when he won as an amateur in the 2009 Irish Open, a European Tour competition that immediately catapulted him into the professional sphere.
“My life changed overnight. At that time I wasn’t even a student, I had left university. I was just an amateur golfer. I didn’t have much money in my bank account. And suddenly you’re on the European Tour. It was a huge thing for the city, there was a parade and party until the early hours,” Lowry recalls.
Three years after that, in Europe he won the Portugal Masters in 2012 and, already with a PGA Tour card, he won the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational in 2015, consolidating a game that exploded when, in 2019, he won the British Open, the culmination of a sporting career that immediately made him a reference in world golf.
The 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the 2022 BMW PGA Championship and, again on the American Circuit, the recent Zurich Classic of New Orleans this same season make Lowry one of the great references of world golf, present at the end of September at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid.
