The Open de España presented by Madrid adds another top-level attraction. Following the confirmation of Jon Rahm, Sergio García and Patrick Reed, the Irishman Shane Lowry, one of the most charismatic and celebrated golfers on the international scene, has announced his presence at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 9 to 12 October
Lowry is already on American soil to defend the European team next week at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage (New York), an event where he will once again be a key player in the defence of the trophy. His presence in Madrid ensures the tournament has a star-studded lineup.
At 37 years old, Lowry can boast a brilliant résumé: seven professional victories, four on the DP World Tour and three on the PGA Tour. The most memorable of all, without a doubt, is winning the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, which definitively propelled him to the elite.
But his success story began much earlier. In 2009, still as an amateur, he surprised the world by winning the Irish Open, becoming only the third amateur to win a European Tour title. “My life changed overnight. I had no money in the account, and suddenly I was on the European Tour. There were parades, parties… something huge for my town,” Lowry recalls.
Then came the 2012 Portugal Masters, the prestigious 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the 2022 BMW PGA Championship. Despite his victory last year on the PGA Tour in New Orleans alongside Rory McIlroy, Lowry is looking to end a three-year drought on the European Tour in Madrid.
Beyond the titles, Shane Lowry is one of the most beloved personalities on the tour. Passionate about Gaelic football, rugby and football, he exudes a friendly and approachable character that connects with fans. Not surprisingly, he was one of Ireland’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
With his confirmation, the Open de España ensures an exceptional protagonist who, along with Rahm, García and the rest of the Armada, promises to turn the Madrid event into a true golf festival.
