The third day of this second week of the first stage of the DP World Tour School was completed this Thursday. It sounds like a tongue twister, but you can see that overcoming this tough ordeal is not only challenging for golfers.
If you look at the online leaderboard of the European circuit for the Hulencurt event, it shows that we only have one Spaniard in the top 18, who will be those advancing to the second stage when the four rounds are completed tomorrow. That Spaniard goes by the name of Alejandro Alonso (PAR). Today he shot 72 and is right in 18th place with a total score of par. However, there’s something fishy here… or a mystery yet to be completely solved.
On the European circuit’s website, they place the Spanish flag next to his name, but according to all sources consulted by Ten Golf, Alejandro Alonso is a golfer from Mexico, a newly minted professional. In May, he completed his four-year journey at Loyola Marymount University, with a performance that improved over time. His final year was the best. In fact, his university profile states that he was born in Mexico City.
More fuel to the fire. Last June, having just turned professional, he competed in California at the Mexican Professional Tour School of Golf. He did so with resounding success. He dominated the three-round tournament from start to finish and secured a full card for the next season. His golf bag features advertising from Aeroméxico. In other words, everything suggests that the placement of the Spanish flag is an error by the DP World Tour itself and it should be the Mexican flag.
However, there’s a final twist in this mystery. The Spaniard Josep María Serra (+2) played with him this Thursday. He asked him about his origins and, according to what he confirmed to Ten Golf, he said he is Mexican but also holds a Spanish passport. So, either there’s a mistake by the DP World Tour in the classification, or Alejandro Alonso has decided to compete under the Spanish flag. We will resolve this sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Alonso is within that Top 18, while Serra is two shots away from the main goal after carding a 73 today. The Catalan is still an amateur player. He had the round well under control, but a poor finish with three bogeys in the last five holes caused him to lose ground. Nothing that can’t be recovered this Friday.
Things are even more difficult for Pablo Alperi (+4). The Asturian had a bad day at the office. He shot 76 and is four shots off the target. The good news is that he has already shown he can score low on the Belgian course at Hulencurt. The reference should be that round of 69 he shot yesterday, Wednesday.
In the other school being played in Huddersfield, we were left without Spanish players this Wednesday on the cut-off day.
