The European Tour has announced that in January 2025 the Team Cup will be held, or what is the same, the old Seve Trophy which, after a few years without being disputed, returned in 2023 under the name of Hero Cup.
There were doubts that the tournament would be held and this Monday morning they have completely dissipated. The event, which serves as preparation for next year’s Ryder Cup, will be held from January 10 to 12 next year at the Abu Dhabi Golf Resort. Great news.
Great Britain and Ireland will seek revenge from two years ago when Continental Europe won by a clear 14.5 to 10.5.
Francesco Molinari will repeat the captaincy he exercised two years ago and that gave such good results to the continental team. In the case of the islands, it will be Justin Rose, one of the heroes of the victory at Marco Simone, who will lead the team, always under the watchful supervision of course of captain Luke Donald.
Each team is made up of ten players, and in addition to Molinari and Rose who are captains but also play, the sides will be made up of the first four available members of each team from the final classification of the Race to Dubai 2024. The remaining five players from each team will be selected by the respective captains in consultation with Donald.
As an interesting detail, of the twenty players who participated in the edition two years ago, finally eight players were part of the Marco Simone in Rome. It is not a negligible number, far from it: Nicolai Hojgaard, Sepp Straka, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre.
The tournament also serves as an opportunity for coexistence and for the captain to see possible pairings or emerging players who can make the leap that same year in Bethpage. Pablo Larrazábal himself acknowledged a few weeks ago in his blog, that it was a week he had marked in red on his start of the year calendar.
Just like in 2023, the teams will compete in a fourballs session on Friday, two foursomes sessions on Saturday and a singles session on Sunday, and all players will participate in all four sessions. Each match will be worth one point, and the team that surpasses the barrier of 12½ points will win the Team Cup.
