Tommy Fleetwood continues in a state of grace. After winning the FedEx Cup of the PGA Tour, triumphing at the TOUR Championship in Atlanta, and once again being a key player for Europe to repeat victory in the Ryder Cup, held at the end of September at Bethpage Black, the Englishman once again tastes the sweetness of success by adding a new trophy to his record, this time the DP World India Championship of the DP World Tour held this past weekend.
With a two-shot lead over Keita Nakajima, Tommy put the perfect finishing touch to a great week of golf that leaves him not only with a great memory for the treatment received but also eager to return in a year to India to defend the title. “It has been an incredible week, we were all excited about this tournament and I really enjoyed the course, the fans in New Delhi, and the hospitality we received. I didn’t need a reason to return to India, but defending the trophy is a very good one,” he said in his official press conference after the victory.

For Fleetwood, seeing himself more often in a position to win is a feeling he hopes to maintain over time: “In my victory at East Lake I felt that I hadn’t done anything different from the times I had lost, I just kept learning from each experience. Being in that position more often, competing to win, is something I am proud of. The form doesn’t last forever, but I want to be as consistent a player as possible because every time I’m in the fight I learn more about myself.”
This week he had to face a very demanding course, with narrow fairways, where the driver was practically never taken out of the bag and where precision won the battle over power: The course was a unique test. I liked how it was played strategically, with many short and medium irons. I started well on Thursday, although I wasn’t hitting the ball as I wanted. I felt the course was making me modify my swing too much, so I had to work on it. Today on the greens I was incredibly good, I made great putts and it was a perfect opportunity to show a good attitude.”
Many players prefer to focus on their game and not pay too much attention to their opponents, something similar to what Fleetwood did this Sunday: “I look at the scoreboards, of course, but then I have to remind myself that I can only control my next shot. I saw that Dan and Keita had started strong. I just focused on continuing to play my game, without forcing it. I looked at the scoreboard again on the 14th and saw that I was leading. At that moment I was only thinking about staying calm and executing each shot.”

On the 18th green, as soon as his victory was confirmed, Tommy experienced a very special moment with his son that he explained later and gave meaning to what he experienced these days in India: “My son told me last week: ‘Do you know something you’ve never done? Win a tournament and have me run to the green to hug you.’ I wrote that phrase when I got home: ‘You’ve never won and I’ve run to the green.’ I had it in mind throughout the tournament. Today, on the 18th, I knew that was what I was pursuing, and it was a beautiful moment.”
As for his next steps, the Englishman is very clear: “This victory means a lot. It allows me to continue playing in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and I still have goals to achieve. I want to improve my results in the majors and in the DP World Tour ranking. A Masters? Hopefully. I constantly imagine it, now it has to become a reality. I still have a lot to do in my career. I enjoy chasing those dreams, knowing that every day counts.” We will have to wait until April to fight for the Green Jacket, for now, climbing to 25th place in the Race to Dubai and into the playoffs, he can dream of the double after his triumph in the FedEx…
