The Hero World Challenge announced this Tuesday an initial list of confirmed players for its tournament in the Bahamas from 5th to 8th December. As everyone knows, it is Tiger Woods‘ tournament, which is not official for the FedEx Cup, although the victory does count and it serves as the closing of the 2024 calendar in the American circuit. An event, by the way, that Jon Rahm won in his day.
There are a total of 20 players, and 17 have been confirmed. Among them, the name of Scottie Scheffler shines brightly. Also present are Sahith Theegala, Matsuyama, Cantlay, and Keegan Bradley, the newly appointed captain of the Ryder Cup.
However, on this side of the Atlantic, what interests most in the analysis is the presence of up to four European players, some directly from the DP World Tour, such as Matthieu Pavon, Robert MacIntyre, and Aaron Rai. It is undoubtedly a recognition of the progression of these players who began their careers on the European circuit. Additionally, there is the Swede Ludvig Aberg, who has also played in Europe, although it would be very bold to consider him a product of the DP World Tour.
The presence of Pavon and Rai is undoubtedly surprising. It is incredible how life has changed for the Frenchman in just over a year. In October last year, he won the Open de España and today he is selected to play in a tournament where many of the world’s top 20 players are present. Beyond the fact that these players have earned it on the field, achieving very good results on the PGA Tour and climbing in the rankings, it is also a way to highlight the European circuit and reinforce the benefit that the 10 cards distributed each year in the Race to Dubai bring to players.
It should be noted that 17 names have been announced, but three more are yet to be confirmed. It is expected that one of those spots will be for Tiger Woods, but it will obviously depend on his physical condition. As for the absences, the most notable are Schauffele, Morikawa, McIlroy, and especially Justin Thomas, although this is clearly related to him becoming a father for the first time in November.
