Sergio García has bid farewell to the Open de España with a very bitter taste. He couldn’t hide it. He signed off with a final round of par to finish beyond the 40th position in the standings, far from his expectations at the start of the week. He had been training well at home, but he wasn’t able to translate that into competition. Frustration and disappointment are the two words that define Sergio’s return home.
The golfer from Borriol addressed the media and gave a balance as concrete as it was precise. He clearly separated his two experiences this week. “Very good because of the people; in terms of play, not very good. But well, being with the people, feeling the warmth… Yes, it’s what I’ve said: the people, very good; the support, incredible, but the week, yes, bad.” No sugar-coating.
Sergio is not going to meet the minimum number of tournaments required by the DP World Tour regulations. It’s already official. He has played only two and four are needed when one of them is the Open of your country. He will not play in India or Korea and has not qualified for Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This leaves him in a delicate situation. We’ll see how it resolves, but it doesn’t look good. In fact, García himself made it clear that things with the European Tour were not at all well. “Well, that it has been fixed… what has been fixed? Yes, I am a member of the DP World Tour, but it hasn’t been fixed yet. There are many things that still need to be fixed,” he insisted.
Sergio’s Statements
What is very clear is that Sergio will not play official competition until the start of LIV Golf at the beginning of February next year. It will be three and a half months without playing. He has no complaints. “I am delighted, the best thing I have in my life at this moment. Right now, disconnecting from golf is something good, positive. I have never disconnected in my entire life. Having the possibility to be three or four months without playing any tournament is very good.”
In this regard, Sergio hopes to play the Open de España next year, although it remains to be seen what the situation will be. Let’s not forget that 2026 is not a Ryder year. “We’ll see. Obviously, I would love to play the Open de España. I have always said that playing in Spain is very special and I love it. But well, it will depend a little on how things go, right?”
As for the goals for next year, Sergio maintains the same line as this year. “Try to do the best possible and play all the Majors I can. And, well, try to do the best possible in all the tournaments,” he limited himself to saying. He preferred not to say anything about LIV Golf and the world ranking points. “No, I’m not going to talk about that. We’ve been talking about that for a long time and I’m not going to waste my time.”
