There are four golfers who are playing for more than just a victory in an important tour or a card for next year this week. It’s about their presence in the 2026 Masters at Augusta. Of the four, two will compete for the grand prize on the course, hitting balls and trying to make as many birdies as possible, while the other two will do so from the comfort of their homes. The protagonists of these four days of high tension are Taylor Pendrith, Sam Stevens, Ryan Gerard, and Daniel Brown.
The situation is as follows. Canadian Pendrith and American Stevens are ranked 49th and 50th respectively in the world golf rankings. As is well known, one of Augusta’s classic exemptions states that the top 50 at the end of the year will automatically qualify to play in the following year’s Masters, the first Major of the season, which is always held in April. That is to say, right now Pendrith, who already played in last year’s Masters, his debut in the tournament, and Stevens, who has yet to make his debut, would currently be qualified.
This situation can only be changed by what happens at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a DP World Tour tournament that begins this Thursday and will indeed mark the end of the 2025 high-competition golf year. This is where Ryan Gerard and Daniel Brown come into play. Both are playing in the tournament and have a mathematical chance to break into the world’s top 50 and oust Pendrith and/or Stevens.
For this to happen, the calculations are quite clear. Brown needs to win the tournament. The Englishman, winner of this year’s BMW International Open and defeated in two playoffs in Bahrain and the Open de España, has the opportunity to debut in the Masters next year. It’s not easy because he needs to win, but in his favour is the fact that in 2023, at the Mauritius Open held on the same course as this year, Brown finished third. Therefore, the feelings shouldn’t be bad, although he hasn’t played since the Dubai Final.
Meanwhile, Ryan Gerard, who has also never played in the Masters, needs to finish at least in fourth place tied with only one other player. If he does, he will end the year in the top 50 and qualify for the Masters. Gerard has already been among the top 50 in the world this year, especially after winning the Barracuda Championship, but he has slipped in recent weeks, particularly because he finished far back in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the European Tour and missed the cut at the RSM Classic. Let’s say he hasn’t had a good autumn.
As it stands, these four players have a little more to play for this week and aim for a good performance. The Masters is well worth one last effort to celebrate Christmas and the New Year in style.
