The Spanish golf scene is in luck. Estrella Damm returns to professional tournaments after a year-long hiatus. Specifically, the great news that Ten Golf has learned is that in the coming dates, the DP World Tour will announce the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship to be held from 2026 to 2031. It will be the perfect prelude to the Ryder Cup to be played in that year 2031, although it is still pending its own official announcement.
Initially, the idea is for the tournament to be held in October, as was done with the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters, first in Valderrama, and then in Sotogrande. Meanwhile, the venue should be none other than Camiral Wellness, formerly PGA de Catalunya, the same course where, barring a major surprise, the Ryder Cup will be held in 2031.
The holding of this tournament is part of that great agreement for the Ryder Cup. It always happens. Italy also had a tournament in the five years leading up to the Ryder at Marco Simone. It is a way to prepare the course, adjusting it both sportingly and, above all, logistically, and at the same time a way to get that area and its surroundings accustomed to hosting a professional golf tournament.
Estrella Damm returns to professional golf tournaments after a year-long hiatus. And it does so with great strength, as its goal is also to be the main sponsor of the Ryder Cup.
Camiral Wellness is no stranger to organising top-level tournaments. Let’s remember that in its facilities, specifically in the Stadium Course, the Open de España has been held, as well as the Catalunya Championship of 2022 won by Adri Arnaus. There is experience and a lot of enthusiasm from Dennis O’Brien, the owner of the complex and main driving force behind the idea of hosting the Ryder Cup.
All conversations are more than advanced, the documents signed, and only the official announcement remains, which should be made in the coming dates, probably during the two weeks after the Open Championship, coinciding with the absence of a DP World Tour tournament.
This is excellent news, as it would mean the resumption of two DP World Tour tournaments on Spanish soil from next year. We will have to see if this Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship is held on the Stadium course, although it is most likely that it will already be played on that mix, or as the English say, composite, of Stadium and the Tour that has been proposed and accepted for the Ryder Cup.
A reason to celebrate.
