Henrik Stenson has made the decision to return to European golf after his fall in LIV Golf. The Swede, relegated at the end of 2025 and without a spot in the Saudi league, has already settled —according to bunkered.co.uk— more than a million pounds in fines to regain his membership of the DP World Tour.

His return, however, raised certain doubts. What category will he be able to play in? Is his return immediate? And that’s where Ten Golf has been able to learn more. Sources close to the Swedish player confirm that Stenson will be able to compete next season with category 11a, the Legends category, an exemption reserved for iconic champions and which now becomes his passport back to the tour that was his home for 23 years. Beyond his achievements, he is the seventh player with the most earnings on the Career Money List. That will be his way of accessing the DP World Tour tournaments once he regains all his rights as a member.

On the other hand, and this is the second key point, it seems he will not be able to return immediately. Although he regains his status, Stenson will not be able to compete in the DP World Tour at the start of this season. He will have to wait until January 2026 to appear in a circuit tournament, not before. December 2025 remains off-limits due to the calendar and internal regulations. The player’s plans are unknown as he has not yet spoken, but everything points to it not being possible before next year. It should not be forgotten that the 2026 season starts this week.

Stenson had not appeared in Europe since the Dubai Desert Classic of 2023, where he signed a final 64 that returned him, if only for a day, to his former glory. All that was left behind when he decided to join LIV Golf and was stripped of the European captaincy of the Ryder Cup, one of the tensest episodes of the rift between circuits.

This was compounded by a poor 2025 in terms of results: he finished 52nd in the season standings, within the dreaded “Drop Zone”, and was left out of Majesticks. Without an invitation from LIV to continue, without fines paid by the PIF —which has already announced it will stop covering those sanctions— and without guarantees in the January Promotions Event, Stenson has chosen to pay, return, and rebuild.

“In a career, you have good and bad years… I had the worst year of the team,” he acknowledged after his descent. The return of the 2016 Open champion coincides with sensitive weeks for Wentworth, which still has pending appeals —such as those of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton— although these are progressing much more slowly than the one that resolved the case of Stenson and the first players who jumped to LIV. What is certain is that Stenson will once again be a player on the DP World Tour. He will do so with category, with full rights… but with a postponed schedule. January 2026 will be the start of the second chapter of his European career.
