Jon Rahm has not reached an agreement with the DP World Tour to wipe the slate clean regarding the fines and sanctions he has accumulated for playing in LIV Golf. It was an opportunity to reset and start anew, at least in 2026, as the agreement is only for this year, but the train, which others like Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Thomas Detry, or David Puig have boarded, has passed him by. Remember that the DP World Tour has offered its LIV members to eliminate fines in 2026 in exchange for paying everything by 31 December 2025 and committing to play a series of tournaments, different in each case. Jon has not accepted their conditions.
In reality, Rahm is the only member of the European circuit playing in LIV Golf with real chances of going to the Ryder Cup who has not signed this agreement. This places him in a delicate situation. What is his most immediate future? Here are the key points you need to know to understand what is happening:
– Jon Rahm is currently a member of the DP World Tour. He is because he filed a lawsuit in October 2024 against the sanction imposed by the European circuit for his participation in LIV Golf tournaments without the corresponding permission from the European circuit. The lawsuit has not yet been resolved, so for now, the circuit’s punishment is under precautionary suspension.
– According to Ten Golf, the final verdict is close to being known. It will not take more than two months, probably before the Masters Tournament.
– Once the resolution occurs, there are two options: the first is that the judge sides with Jon Rahm, the European circuit’s sanction is deemed illegal and nullified, and Jon continues to be a member of the DP World Tour without any problem. The second and more likely, because it was already ruled this way in 2023, is that the judge sides with the European Circuit.
– If Jon loses the claim, he has two options ahead:
1.- Cease to be a member of the DP World Tour and thus not pay fines or face suspensions. He would remain in a sort of limbo. He could only play European circuit tournaments by invitation and would not be able to participate in the Ryder Cup.
2.- Pay the fines, serve the sanctions, and continue playing in the DP World Tour with the possibility of being eligible for the Ryder Cup. The problem with this option is that fines would continue to occur if he keeps playing in LIV Golf.
Another possibility is that Jon Rahm and the DP World Tour reach an agreement before the final verdict of this sole judge. The first offer that the European circuit put on the table has expired, but neither party has refused to sit down again and explore the possibility of reaching another agreement. In any case, applying logic, this possibility does not seem simple, as if there had been genuine willingness by the parties to reach an agreement, it would have happened now along with the other eight cases.
As things stand, even if Jon loses his status as a member of the DP World Tour, he will always be able to continue playing by invitation in the Spanish Open and some other tournaments on the calendar, but he will not be eligible for the Ryder Cup. For the latter, an exception would have to be made for him, something absolutely unthinkable at this time due to the precedent and the comparative grievance it would represent for the rest.
