It was on hole 1, right at the start, on his second shot. He had just over 110 meters to the flag and he made it. Eagle. Boom. Joy. Jumping in the street, hugging his brother Luis, who is caddying for him, and the family going wild beyond the ropes. Impressive. Two under par after one hole. Second by one stroke. Up on the boards. Get out your phones and take a picture for the memory.
The Open’s statistics say that no one had started their career at the British with an eagle on hole 1. Montojo did. Making history right off the bat. This way he reminds us of Eduard Rousaud, when in 2020, still an amateur, he started the US Open at Winged Foot with an eagle, a Major in which he was making his debut. Spanish amateurs have something special.
And great-grandmother Maria, wherever she may be, is still causing a stir…
