The year has started joyfully for the Fernández García-Poggio sisters. And what starts well… Cayetana and Blanca significantly contributed to Texas A&M‘s victory in the head-to-head against USC (University of Southern California) at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe.
The aggies won 4 and 2 against the troyans, avenging the defeat suffered in the last autumn match that both teams played at the East Lake Cup. Both Cata and Blanca won their respective matches.
The Number Two in the world amateur ranking got the first point for A&M by winning 3 and 2 against Brianna Navarrosa, while the elder of the saga did the same a few minutes later against Amari Avery by 3 and 1. Mia Nixon sealed the third point (2 and 1) for the Texans with a 10-foot par putt on the 17th against Bailey Shoemaker and Jennie Park sentenced the Californians by winning 2 up against Cindy Kou. The first two matches of the day were won by USC: Sky Sudberry lost 5 and 4 against Catherine Park and Zoe Slaughter also fell 3 and 2 against Christine Wang.
“We competed very hard and beat a good team,” said the Texan coach, Gerrod Chadwell. “Our energy was great, we kept our emotions in a good place and I was very impressed. We lost the first two matches of the day but we had control of the other four. We played well and gained good game experience against a very strong team,” Chadwell pointed out.
The Farms Golf Club is located less than 35 kilometers from the headquarters of the NCAA Final of 2024, which will now be played at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa from May 17 to 22. The aggies reached the semifinals in the last two years. They will compete again in the Puerto Rico Classic from February 4 to 6.
