Bryson DeChambeau, the great scientist of golf, known for his university education in physics and his empirical approach to the sport, has once again surprised with his latest discovery: a driver co-designed with LA Golf that promises to be a true innovation. This new club, announced for release in 2025, is a true reflection of DeChambeau’s obsession with every detail, no matter how small, as well as his passion for physics and materials at the next level. It is designed for professionals and amateurs.
DeChambeau, who has always stood out for his unconventional approach, has collaborated with LA Golf for over a year to create what he himself describes as “the most innovative driver ever made”. According to Golf Monthly, this club introduces a revolutionary concept: a face specifically designed to adapt to each golfer’s swing speed. This approach aims to ensure that imperfect shots —those not struck in the centre of the clubface— produce straighter and more consistent trajectories, something DeChambeau considers essential for maximising performance.
The idea behind this design has its roots in physics, a discipline that DeChambeau masters and applies meticulously. Traditionally, drivers have a curvature on the face known as “bulge and roll”, which helps correct the ball’s trajectory on shots not struck with the centre of the face. However, the new driver from LA Golf takes this technology a step further by customising it according to each player’s profile. “It’s time to make your missed shots go straight,” stated DeChambeau, highlighting how this innovation could democratise distance and accuracy in golf.
Cutting-edge materials and DeChambeau’s signature quirks
True to his track record, DeChambeau does not settle for the traditional. His interest in advanced materials is evident in this project. Although the specific details of the driver have not yet been fully revealed, media suggest it is likely to incorporate a significant amount of carbon, similar to the Bel Air and Malibu putters from LA Golf. This material, lightweight yet strong, could be key to achieving the balance between durability and performance that DeChambeau seeks.
Furthermore, this driver is not without the quirks that have defined DeChambeau’s career. Remember that this golfer, winner of two U.S. Open (2020 and 2024), is famous for using single-length irons (37.5 inches), oversized JumboMax grips, and customised graphite shafts, even in his putter. His swing, which keeps the club on a single plane without wrist rotation, is another example of how he applies principles of Physics to optimise consistency. The new driver seems to be a natural extension of this philosophy, merging his love for experimentation with a design that challenges established norms.
From the elite to the masses: a potentially transformative impact
DeChambeau has not only designed this driver for his own benefit —as demonstrated by his victory at the LIV Golf Greenbrier in 2023 using a Krank Formula Fire LD— but also has the ambition to bring this technology to the general public. “It’s not about it being unique to me; it needs to be made for the everyday player,” he said. This vision resonates with his belief that every golfer, regardless of their level, should have access to equipment that maximises their potential.
The CEO of LA Golf, Reed Dickens, reinforces this idea by pointing out that the driver pursues “the holy grail of gaining distance while reducing dispersion”. While the club is designed for high-speed players like DeChambeau —whose ball speed exceeds 175 miles per hour—, the customisation of the face could adapt to different profiles, from amateurs to elite professionals.
A legacy of innovation
This is not DeChambeau’s first attempt to revolutionise golf equipment. In 2023 the Krank Formula Fire LD, a driver designed for long-distance competitions, led him to sign a historic 58 at Greenbrier, demonstrating that his experiments sometimes yield tangible results. Now, with LA Golf, DeChambeau seems determined to leave an even deeper mark, combining his scientific knowledge with a brand famous for its provocative approach and use of cutting-edge technologies.
Although we will have to wait a bit to see the final product and analyse its performance in detail, Bryson DeChambeau’s new driver is already generating expectations. The winner of the NCAA and the US Amateur in the same year, an achievement only within reach of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, once again challenges the limits. We will have to see if the scientist has hit the mark with this driver and if it is as democratic as he claims.
