Five Spanish players are making an appearance at the 80th edition of the US Women’s Open. The second women’s Major of the year is here. Erin Hills is preparing to host an edition with a strong Spanish representation.
Carlota Ciganda, Julia López, Carla Bernat, Paula Martín, and Carolina López Chacarra form the starting quintet this week. The player from Castellón qualified thanks to her victory in the ANWA, and Julia, Paula, and Carolina passed their respective qualifiers. Carlota Ciganda will play her 63rd consecutive Major. Quite something. For two of them, it is an even more special week. Paula and Carol are making their Major debut. All except Carlota are appearing for the first time at the US Women’s Open.
The tee times for the first two rounds in Wisconsin have been published, and the Spanish players have been placed in more than interesting groups. It is worth highlighting the three national amateurs. The Spanish youth is making a strong impression, and the USGA has acknowledged this, at least with a nod.
Carla Bernat will share a group with a double Major champion like Brooke Henderson. The Canadian lifted the Women’s PGA Championship in 2016 and the Evian Championship less than three years ago. Brooke has accumulated twelve victories on the LPGA Tour. Quite something. A gesture towards the ANWA 2025 winner. The third in the group will be the Korean Hye-Jin Choi, who knows what it’s like to finish second in this very tournament. The eagerly awaited debut will be on Thursday at 14:07 Spanish time.
Paula Martín’s group is also noteworthy. She will debut at 20:47 in the same group as the winner of the LET Order of Merit 2024, the Swiss Chiara Tamburlini. Carolina López Chacarra, on the other hand, will have a shared tee time at 15:47 with two LPGA champions, Gemma Dryburgh and the Thai Moriya Jutanugarn. The Scot also knows what it’s like to play in a Solheim Cup.
The veteran of the Armada, Carlota Ciganda, will play alongside one of the American heroines of the last Solheim Cup, Sarah Schmelzel. In the same group will be the 25-year-old Australian, Stephanie Kyriacou. Julia López, who is experiencing her rookie season on the LPGA, will do the same alongside the Thai amateur, Nicha Kanpai, and the German Isi Gabsa.
Among the other groups, the one featuring the World Number One, Nelly Korda, alongside Charley Hull and Lexi Thompson, stands out. Another highlight at the start will be the last Major winner, Mao Saigo, alongside the Korean Jin Young Ko and the Australian Min Jee Lee.
