The Royal Liverpool Golf Club has released images of the controlled explosion used to neutralise a bomb found on the Hoylake course on 12 December. The historic links —host of the Open Championship on 13 occasions— shared the video and several photographs of the operation on Monday, 15 December, which then forced the evacuation of the course and suspension of all play.
This week, an unexploded artillery shell was found on the course.
Following a successful controlled explosion carried out by specialists, the site was made safe.

The device was located by club staff during routine drainage work, buried several metres below the playing surface, which immediately suggested it was a remnant from wartime. After the alert, the police cordoned off the area and the specialised team was activated, culminating the intervention with a controlled detonation to secure the site.
Royal Liverpool last hosted the Open in 2023, an edition in which Brian Harman took home the Claret Jug. This time, the protagonist has been an unusual discovery… and the images of the exact moment the issue was resolved.
