Joy, excitement, and the understandable nerves of an impressive setting. That’s how Carla Bernat appeared right after winning the Augusta National Women’s Amateur 2025. Without a doubt, the woman from Castellón is the happiest on the planet, and she expressed it just minutes after securing the victory: “It’s incredible. I’m on cloud nine. My brain still hasn’t processed that I’ve won.”
In the private trophy presentation ceremony with Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National, she highlighted what was perhaps the decisive moment of the tournament: “I’ve watched the Masters all my life and I know that in the last nine holes, a new tournament begins. That’s where everything is at stake, so when I hit the second shot and saw that par was in danger, I told myself I had to do everything possible to save it, and fortunately, I was able to do it.”
A few minutes later, at the awards ceremony with the public and members of Augusta National, a nervous and emotional Carla was seen, who amidst laughter and applause, apologised for her accent, which is more than notable.
She wanted to remember her parents and her brother: “They couldn’t come because my brother is at school and couldn’t miss class, but I know you’re watching me now and I want to tell you that I love you very much,” said Carla, on the verge of tears, overwhelmed with emotion.
She also expressed gratitude to her head coach at Kansas State University and her university assistant and caddie this week, Rinko Mitsunaga: “The victory is thanks to her. Rinko knows how to guide and manage me. I’m very grateful that she carried my bag these three days.” Her voice broke again when speaking about her caddie this week.
A few minutes earlier on television, she also had words for Víctor García, father of Sergio García and one of the great mentors from the beginning of the Castellón player’s career: “I’m very grateful to him. He helped me a lot with my swing and even off the golf course, he’s always there for whatever I need. I wish he could be here today.”
