The Tenerife Women’s Open 2025 will bring together the best golfers of the Ladies European Tour at Abama Golf from 5th to 8th June, in one of the major events on the international calendar. In this edition, the Spanish presence will be particularly prominent, with 17 national players ready to fight for the title at home, led by seasoned champions and new promises of women’s golf.

Leading the national lineup are Marta Martín, the last Spanish winner on the LET thanks to her victory at the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open 2024, and Nuria Iturrioz, the most decorated of all present with four victories: two at the Lalla Meryem Cup (2016 and 2019), as well as the Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic (2019) and La Sella Open (2023). Also present will be María Hernández, who achieved her only circuit victory at the Ladies Slovak Open 2010, in a brilliant debut season in which she also earned her LPGA card. Carmen Alonso, after 19 years as a professional and over 250 tournaments played, finally achieved her long-awaited victory on the LET in 2023, at the Ladies Open by Pickala Rock Resort, and will be another key player at Abama.

Competing alongside them will be Ana Peláez, winner of the Madrid Ladies Open 2022; Luna Sobrón, Harang Lee, Mireia Prat, Teresa Toscano, Amaia Latorre, Blanca Fernández, Marta Sanz, Marina Escobar, Paz Marfá, Natasha Fear, Clara Moyano and the Canary Islander Emma Cabrera Bello.

Emma Cabrera-Bello, one of the most recognised figures in women’s golf on the islands, expressed her excitement about the return of the European circuit to Tenerife: «As a Canary Islander, I can only feel proud that the island of Tenerife, the Cabildo and Abama Golf have once again supported women’s golf. It was greatly missed. For me, it was a beautiful experience to play this tournament first as an amateur and then as a professional, and I had been waiting for years for the right circumstances for top-level women’s golf to return home. The current level has increased significantly, and those who experienced those editions in the 2000s, if they return now, will see a much higher-level spectacle».

Emma, a professional since 2008, also reflected on how women’s golf has evolved in recent decades: «What I notice most is that now players hit much harder. Carmen Alonso and I, back in those years, fought for tournament directors to set longer courses because we had powerful shots… and now I’m not even among the longest hitters. The physical and technical evolution has been tremendous, especially in the short game, which has also improved significantly. The new generations are very well prepared».

The player also highlighted Tenerife’s unique appeal as a destination for international golfers: «Tenerife evokes emotions. It has a privileged climate that allows for year-round play, but it is also a visual spectacle. The courses have views of the sea, La Gomera, and on some days you can even see La Palma or El Hierro. The courses are designed like terraces due to the island’s elevation, which means there are many scenic holes. Additionally, the way the courses have been maintained, with palm groves, Canary stone, and traditional agricultural terraces, gives them a special and authentic charm. They are courses very well integrated into the environment».

Regarding Abama Golf, the tournament venue, she highlighted both the condition of the course and its technical demands: «The course is in spectacular condition, congratulations to Brendan Breen and the entire team for their work. It has very large greens with many slopes, so it’s not just about hitting the green, you have to leave it in the right area. The wind can also play an important role here. Even if there’s no gale, there are constant breezes and changes depending on the hole’s altitude. I know this course well and know that whoever is sharpest with their irons and can read the wind well will have an advantage. It will be a beautiful week for the players and the public».

Tenerife thus returns to the forefront of women’s golf, reviving an event that was an essential part of the LET calendar between 2002 and 2010, and which had champions such as Raquel Carriedo, Elizabeth Esterl, Diana Luna, Felicity Johnson or Trish Johnson. Years later, the island also hosted two Spanish Women’s Opens, in 2012 and 2014, reinforcing its close ties with international golf.

Tenerife, a destination for golf, tourism and sustainability

Tenerife not only hosts one of the most significant tournaments in European women’s golf: it also reaffirms itself as one of the most solid and sustainable golf tourism destinations in Europe. With nine top-level courses, the island combines a privileged climate, a five-star hotel offering, and unique nature that attracts thousands of golfers each year.

Almost 97% of the water used by Tenerife’s courses is recycled or desalinated, a fact that demonstrates the island’s commitment to sustainability and the circular economy. The technological investment in irrigation systems, the use of low-consumption grass varieties such as Bermuda or Paspalum, and the landscape integration make Tenerife an example of balance between sport, tourism, and the environment.

The profile of the golf tourist on the island is also a differential asset: with an average family income of €63,521, an average stay of 11.6 nights, and a spend per person per day of €213.30, well above the conventional visitor, this segment generated more than €321 million in revenue for Tenerife in 2024, 12.2% more than the previous year.

For all these reasons, the Tenerife Women’s Open is not just a tournament: it is a platform for visibility for national talent, the beauty of the surroundings, and the quality tourism model that Tenerife represents. An opportunity to make history… and to enjoy the best golf in one of the most spectacular places in the world.
