Another brushstroke that further legitimises the golden generation

…And then one of the three Spanish amateur players present at the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España appears, Andrea Revuelta (-11) to be precise, and signs the best card of the tournament after three rounds, climbing to the top 3 on the leaderboard and, therefore, getting into the final Sunday match. A 64, eight under par for the day, which further legitimises the exciting expectations that this burgeoning generation of very young players is raising in the Spanish golf world.

“Things are coming,” says a smiling Revuelta when talking about this generation. And rightly so. Besides Julia López, Carla Tejedo, and Blanca Fernández, who have just turned professional and certainly belong to this generation, Spanish women’s golf currently has six more players in the top 35 of the women’s amateur world ranking (Julia López, let’s not forget, turned professional a few days ago, as they say, while being at the top of that ranking, Number 2 in the world). We are talking about almost a dozen players, born between 2001 and 2006, who have also forged, as Andrea admits, something like a bond that unites them all. “We all feel part of that group, we go together, we support each other, and we want the best for the others,” she highlights. In addition to those already mentioned, we include in this golden promotion Cayetana Fernández (2005), Rocío Tejedo (2006), Carolina López Chacarra (2003), and the three players present this week at the Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf, Carla Bernat (2003), Paula Martín (2005), and the author of the stellar 64, Andrea Revuelta (2006), although some others are knocking on the door (Revuelta, for example, also mentions Cloe Amión).

It is also true that a card of eight under par for the day, so absolutely formidable, is still a brick in a great construction yet to be made (Andrea is barely 18 years old and is in her first year at university at Stanford). She knows that this is nothing more than a beautiful and determined brushstroke. “I wouldn’t say that this round of golf has been something like a dream come true. The dream would be to have many more and above all to be able to enjoy it very often as I have today.” Let’s go brushstroke by brushstroke.

She finished the round on the 18th of the Malaga course by sinking a three-metre birdie putt, after playing the hole by the book. Before that, between holes 4 and 14, she had concentrated a powerful battery of seven more birdies. According to her, the main difference with Thursday and Friday, days when she couldn’t even break seventy (71, 70), was whether she holed or not. Revuelta is truly very young, but her poise on the course must be highlighted. Surely the procession goes inside, but apparently, she doesn’t seem intimidated by anything or anyone. Tomorrow, in the final round, she will need all the composure in the world, going out in the last match. The leader, Carlota Ciganda (-17) is far ahead, but brushstroke by brushstroke, who knows…
